Shaft Plane
« on: February 09, 2007, 01:52:00 PM »
Has anyone ever made their own shaft taper plane?  Was looking at 3R's for around $100 and that seems a little hard to swallow.
Perhaps someone could post some clear pictures of a tapering jig for the toolmakers in the crowd to consider.
Thanks.

Just chuck up a shaft in a high speed drill. Spin fast, push slow.....      :archer:
Sawdust, Wood Chips, and Shavings are as close to Potpourri as I get!!!!!!

I put a slot in the bottom of my Trad Gang taper jig to let the dust fall out. This keeps the sandpaper from clogging up.

I also use a piece of sanding belt in my jig that starts under the angle, wraps over the top and is screwed to the outside edge. With strips of sand paper and using the jig to reduce the size of 3/8th poplar dowels the heat generated would cause the paper to bunch up and pull loose.
