Help ID barn find
« on: April 21, 2018, 11:56:02 AM »
I found (and bought) a recurve that I assume is old at a barn sale this morning. It has no string and was covered with grime, but the limbs show no twists or warpage, and no delams or cracks that I can find. After a quick wipe down, the logo is mostly worn off, but there is a large S with a crown on top and the word ‘Mace’ over an image of a mace. On the side there are acouple sets of numbers and the length and poundage (58” and 45# @28”). It looks to have a hardwood core between red or maroon glass, and a hardwood riser made from multiple pieces of light and dark wood. Can anyone help me identify this bow?

Just a quick internet search turned up that it is most likely a Ben Pearson bow in the Sovereign line. Archive information also mentions that cosmetic blemish bows were stamped with an S and sold through large commercial retail outlets like Sears and Montgomery Wards. The Mace bows were one of the Sovereign (Lord, Lady, Mercury) bows with a boo boo on them and discounted.

Archives also mentioned several dark hard woods but most of the light colored wood was Holly.

Good find! Great bows. Have fun with it.

Thank you, Keith! That’s definitely what it is. I gave $5 for it, and I think I’ll clean it up good, put a string on it, and see how it shoots. If all goes well, I’ll refinish it and maybe take it deer hunting this fall. Thanks again!

The Pearson Sovereign line were great, underrated bows and 58" is a great length for a hunting bow. Good find, and an absolute steal at $5.
We are all here because we are not all there.

If it cleans up good, I plan to hunt with it some this fall. Be good for a ground blind, rather than the 62” I usually shoot.
