Deer bedding / scouting question
« on: May 05, 2018, 05:08:04 PM »
Gentlemen (and ladies),

I scouted a new property in the midwest region this week. We've just in the last few weeks had warm spring temperatures here.

This property has steep hills - very steep - on 3 sides, row crops are on the top (plateau).

I intensively scouted this property and found only a few beds on the north side of property, so the side that does not really get sun all day. On the East we found more beds and increasingly more on the south facing side. I knew south facing was popular for bedding but I bet 80% of the beds were on that South side. I am not even sure it would be worth hunting that north side with the low level of sign we saw.

So, it's got me wondering if that is consistently going to be the case - is that your guys experience as well? The habitat was the same on all sides. Easy access to crops, plenty of trees, etc.

Thoughts?

Look for old sign.  what you see today with fresh sign will be vastly different from late November.

Identify food sources and bedding areas.  It will take several years to really figure out a property. South facing slopes are good for late season but as things heat up, these areas will be too warm for them through the summer.
Relax,

You'll live longer!
