super shrew noise

Bought a used super shrew a couple of years ago and love it. However, at the Cloverdale shoot this year I had the string re-served and they evidently damaged the string (450+) and it broke on the first pull. I didn't have a backup string (a long story) so I had a Fast Flight string made for it. It is now as loud as a bass drum! Folks on the practice line all stopped and gaped at me! The old string had two sets of cat whiskers on it. I just put on one set of cat whiskers and it helped somewhat, but certainly not something I can hunt with. Any suggestions?

If I were you I would call either Ron LeClair at Shrew Archery or Gregg Coffee at Javaman Archery and have them get you the correct string. or contact One of the many string makers on this site. TenRing Strings, Champion Bowstrings, HBC STRINGS JUST TO NAME A FEW.

Also the Shrews and Elkheart bows that I have owned really shot the quietest with the skinny 450+ material type strings that they came with.

I've not had much luck with Ron. A couple of years ago I ordered two strings for my Shrew and when they arrived I stuck them into my desk. A couple of months ago I decided to change out the string and then noticed that they were 56" strings and my bow is 58". Don't know if I ordered the wrong size or if Ron sent the wrong size, but no matter. I emailed him about exchanging the 56" strings for 58" (maybe exchange them 2 for 1). Got no answer, so a month ago I sent the strings back to Ron with a check to cover the shipping of the exchanged strings. Still no answer. He must be too busy with Trad Shoots.

quietest with the skinny 450+ .......I second that from Ed. I've had several over the years and still have a Limited Edition model. The bow always had some noise when I used D97 material, but always whisper quiet when using the 450+

BCY-X would be another good choice--it's a Dyneema/Vectran blend as well. For whatever reason, materials with Vectran seem to be a bit quieter (to my ears, haven't done any real tests). IMO doesn't have to be "skinny". Tuning, nock fit, silencer placement, your release, arrow weight, etc. all make a difference in noise as well.

I have a Kanati that i have had for a long time. It's always had "Fast Flight" strings and has always been quiet. But a while back I was in a bind and put a string on it made from Brownell Fury, and it's the loudest thing I have ever shot. Brace height, nock fit, arrow weight, all that has been tried to no results. It's just loud. Twisted up a new string from BCY-X and it's as quiet as it ever was.
That Fury stuff just feels hard to the touch, more like a wire than a "string". Maybe yours is made form similar stuff?
Moral of the story, try a string made outta something else. I would (and did) listen to Chad (LBR) and I'm a happy camper.

I have killed several turkey and deer with different Super Shrews. I always shot the stock strings (450+)provided with the bows and ordered extras from Ron. Ron will get back with you. My dealings with Ron where always excellent whether it was bows or strings.

I have a Dwyer Endeavor which is a similar bow, and 58" as well. The string that came with the bow was a Fast Flight Plus, and no matter what I did, the bow was loud. I went to a SBD string, and it quieted right down. I agree that BCY-X would be a good choice too.
