Whew boy what a time. Good company, food etc as always. Bears were largely nocturnal, as cameras on the baits were showing us and some big ones hit the baits but  in the dark! Four of us took shots but no bears were taken week 1. Full moon? Bugs much worse than usual (black flies were heavy and even 2 thermacells didn't hold them at bay). Hope others chime in with their impressions.

Susan is completely correct. The 80 to 100 pound bears were active during daylight, and a few larger bears were observed. A few shots were taken at bears in the 100-125 range, but none were killed. Mike and I both saw bigger bears out of range during daylight hours, but they stayed out of range. There were several big bears photographed on trail cameras after dark. We all worked hard and hunted hard but the full moon and the bugs had the bears mostly active after dark. That being said, we had a great time -- good food, good people, and beautiful countryside.

Jeff:

 :biglaugh: :biglaugh:

Tom ate most of the Oreos (as expected) though he was kind enough to share. And the overnight bears loved the marshmallows.

It seemed like the mosquitos ate well too.

I did feel about a pint low, now that you mention it. A couple of beers fixed that.

I think maybe the oreos should go ON the baits next year......did I mention that a lot of the bears we saw both in the flesh and on camera had some pretty bad rubbing, right down to the skin on many of them. They were having trouble with the bugs too. On my first sit I was in a ground blind at the "Coleman" stand. A very large bear (biggest I have seen outside of a zoo!) came carefully in, didn't go to the bait but came straight to the blind and looked in :o then put his head up, took a couple of sniffs and peeled out of there, showing me a dinner-plate sized rub right down to his pink skin on his rear end. I would say he was hip to the blind, maybe to the smell of the thermacell, and never gave me anything but a head-on during his approach. WOW!

Susan is right about the bears being well rubbed. Here are photos of "one-eyed-Jack" at the long trail stand. You can see by the reflection in his eye that only his left eye is working. You can also see that he has rubbed his hide until it is almost bare. I really wanted him to come in during daylight, but it was not to be.

Susan, Tom emailed me in response to a question I had for him and said three bears were taking the second week. He didn't say who took them though.
....and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the age. Matt 28:20
