Second Hoyt Pro Hunter Modified & Finished
«

Going through some of my old bows, I found a couple more Hoyt Pro Hunters. Interestingly this Rosewood one has a similar grip profile to my re-make Pro Hunter grip. It is the same weight so, I have it scheduled to go from 48#@28 to 41#@28. Then I'll decide if I want to keep the riser as is or match it up to my re-make Pro Hunter. I think these bows shoot the best compared to the Wings and Bears...JMO tippit
Modified...reduced weight to 40#@28, cut the sight window back, radiused the arrow plate, and slightly lowered the grip heel.

Mostly removed glass. When I check my tiller, I pull them to 34" multiple times. If they are going to break, I want them to break on the tillering tree not when I shoot them. These Hoyt Pro Hunters preform as well as any of my modern bows...tippit

I sand the back & the belly and sometimes taper the edge if I need more weight off. I also don't touch the last 6 inches of the tips. I use my 2X72 knife grinder with 400 grit belts on a rotary platen. You will lose any makings on the limbs but I gain the ability to use an old friend again. I take 4 equal passes on all sides then recheck weight and tiller. I keep going until I get to 40#. Recurves I can get 10# easily and some longbows I've taken 20# off. I've never had one blew up as I pull them all to 34 inches to test.
Disclaimer...I wont sell any of my reduced bows and I won't remove weight for anyone except me!

Nice thing about re-working some of the Old Bows is bringing the beautiful Rosewood back to life...you can't get that wood anymore.

I have a D profile longbow im thinking about trying to drop the weight some on. I have heard about trapping the limbs but didnt know how exactly to go about that

Trapping the limbs is just grinding the edge...but rather than square you grind an angle into the edge either the back or belly edge will be ground. So which edge you grind that surface will be narrower than the opposite side. You don't get much weight off by trapping...much more weight reduction by removing the glass. I'll trap if I don't think I can get anymore glass off. Trapping changes the limb design too...not necessarily bad. I think most longbows are more over built than recurves.
What bow and how much weight do you want to drop? Most bowyers will remove 5#.
