"New" Bow and bareshafting carbons

I got home a half hour early today and decided it was time to bareshaft my "new" Hummingbird Kingfisher 3-pc longbow I got off vermonster13.  62", 53# @28, boo cores, birdseye maple veneers on the back, spalted tamo ash veneers on the belly (complete with through wormholes) and the nicest chunk of cocobolo I've ever seen for a riser.

Now, for the record, that's a 30.5" BOP arrow in that pic that's drawn nearly to the point.  That's right, over a 30" draw

I picked up a dozen Beman Hawk 400 from 3Rivers a while back to play with on my 2-pc Horne Brushbow.  Well, that bow had to go to make room (and funds) for this one, but I figured it was time to play.

I had cut the carbons to 31" and had a variety of point weights to try.  Started off with 250 gr... way too week at 15yd.  Moved down to 175gr and they looked a little better... until I dropped back to 20 yrds and missed a foot right with the bareshaft.  Put on some 125grs and they look just a little weak.  Since that's way too light of an arrow for this bow, I guess they'll be going with the 45# @28" 1959 Bear Polar and loading up the front.

I wasn't too impressed with the carbons.  The two shots that hit dirt both shattered the front end of the shafts.  The second shot that hit dirt went through the shot-out portion of my block target before hitting the ground.  I think I'll stick to wood.  :D

That's 30" of rabbit killin' stroke, dang you have long arms!!

There's better carbons out there bud. But to tell you the truth,I sure miss makin' and shootin' woodies!  But it really is hard to not like well tuned,quality carbon too.....

Are you going to try to make Muzzy this summer?

I'd try Grizzlystyks. I've sent arrows in head-on collisions with boulders. nocks and inserts were blown out of the shafts, feathers unglued due to shock,...but shaft IN-TACT

Bjorn, I figured if I was going to have one bow that was made sometime in the last 40 years it had to be a looker to compete with all the old girls on the bow rack, and a TD would ensure it at least went on the long trips with me  

The mass in that riser is incredible.  To say it's dead in the hand after the shot is an understatement - there's nothing.  No little thump, no vibration, nada.

I have 5 dozen chundoo shafts sitting here.  3 of them are 70-75s and should work for this bow.  I was thinking of tapering 'em before making 'em up, but that requires actual shop time!

I'm gonna try to make it to Muzzy this summer, but it's looking like that will be the weekend we have Evan's 1st Birthday party.  I'm trying to convince the boss a week earlier would be better     If that's a no-go then Denton is back up for negotiation
