Stick and string squirrel
« on: July 09, 2018, 07:32:05 AM »
I've been working on the bushytails pretty hard around the house with my flintlock smoothbore but yesterday I decided to switch it up and use a longbow. Worked out well for me. Not so much for the squirrel.

Very nice.   :bigsmyl:  Squirrel by longbow is pretty dang challenging.  I chase the little boogers around all the time with my bow.  Sometimes I miss because I have poor aim.  Sometimes I miss because they jump the string and are WAY out of the way before the arrow can get there.  Frequently my aim is perfect but they pull some contortionist/ninja move and dodge my shaft when the arrow is about 10-15 feet out; these are the most frustrating misses because they look like a win only to loose in the last minute of the 9th inning.  I rarely seem to make it happen.  It always feels like a great accomplishment to me as a hunter to be able to take such a small and jittery animal with my bow.  While the shot opportunities are numerous which makes it easier in some ways, the execution of the shot on squirrels is among the most difficult of all of the game that I hunt with a bow.

From a few years ago, a warm January day. Ground shots...not nearly as impressive as yours old friend!
