For the money you pay for a sat phone rental get yourself an InReach by garmin and text.
We have two for our Alaska trip and no longer take a sat phone.

We've rented sat phones from:

Ft. Lauderdale must be a happening place for satellite phones.  I rented through Explorer Satellite Communications, Inc.  5201 Ravenswood Road, Ste. 110, Ft Lauderdale. FL. 33312.  Phone is 954-763-8650   www.explorersatellite.com

I rented one while hunting the Brooks Range in AK.  The Sat Phone was tied into an emergency air rescue service.  It had an idiot button that would give my GPS coordinates to the rescue crew in the event I was unable to communicate.  I am going back next year and will have it again for sure.  Luckily, the only thing I needed it for was to call home and find out about football scores.

This is the one I have.

https://explore.garmin.com/en-US/inreach/

It also has the SOS button.  Don't push it unless you want the helicopter rescue team.

The SOS button is what I was referring to as the Idiot button.

Ive used a inReach SE since they came out. I hunt alone 90% of the time and do a lot of back country activities. My wife insisted on some way to get a emergency distress out if needed. One good thing about the inReach is you can check in with family and they can text you back, if you do ever have to use the SOS button the rescue folks can ask you the nature of the emergency and respond accordingly,  meaning it won’t always be a 40k helicopter ride. The text feature has really helped more than once with broken down vehicles in the middle of very remote areas, I have sent my wife texts and had her call to locate parts etc.. when you do send a text or SOS it also sends your coordinates and location on a map. There is also the ability to check weather in areas you normally couldn’t do so.

I looked over the Garmin website and they have several under the "InReach" section of products.  Which one would you guys recommend?  I just need something something to stay in touch with my home in office in case of emergency.  Nothing fancy...just basic stuff.

Anybody have recommendations for sat internet services for remote cabins or RVs?  I don't need to stream videos but still need to return calls, reply to emails and check a few daily items on any business day.

In the inreach if all your going to do is touch base with home or have a provision for SOS I’d go with the basic SE + unless you can find a older SE , when garmin  acquired delorme they expanded the line some and came out with the mini which I really don’t know much about. But everyone I know who has a inreach has bought the explorer which allows for off line navigation and route planning plus has basic gps functions, I have a good touch screen gps and use a iPad with Gaia gps loaded for off hwy routes so the SE serves me perfectly. One thing you will want to do is link it to your phone (easy) and use your phones keyboard. It’s not necessary to do that but it’s sure easier I’m a old guy and if I can figure it out anyone can . be sure to check amazon as well for pricing

I agree with Wingnut, for what it costs to rent a sat phone you can buy an inReach and they work great. Also agree they’re a lot easier to use if paired with your iPhone. I just used one a few weeks ago in northern Saskatchewan.
