how much spine would I loose?
« on: February 10, 2007, 02:17:00 PM »
If I tapered the back 10" of a 70-75 cedar shaft? Assuming 28" BOP 11/32 going to 5/8, if that matters.

while we are at it, would I gain any spine with a 5", 2 point foot of hardwood like walnut on the front end?

If any at all,it would only be 2 to 3 lbs loss,on the taper. If you used a footing of heavy material,i would say you would loose spine,or it would get weaker, with added point weight.I have not noticed much difference,in the shafts i have footed with Walnut, provideing, that they were the same length with the footing,as they were before.

I should have said,Cut to the samelength, with the footing,as you cut them without.

My experince with tapering the back 10" is you lose anywhere from 0 to 2 pounds. I don't know why some shafts lose some and some shafts don't.

Jack,
That is exactly what I have found over the years. The average loss is about 1 pound.

Brent,
Your not going to gain spine by adding a footing to the front but the shaft may acting weaker due to the increased forward weight.  This however is not always the case.  dino
