Finish over a decal
« on: March 25, 2008, 12:23:00 PM »
I did a search but couldn't find any threads that helped.  I'm refinishing a bow that my father made about 40 years ago.  He had a sight mounted to the front of the riser with a brass screw.  I've filled the hole and removed as much staining from the screw as I could, but on an all maple riser, the imperfection will clearly stand out.  I had a thought that I could cover the hole with a small decal.  I'm still working on exactly what I would use - probably something appropriate to my screen name like a wasp or maybe a deer head.  I think that the smaller decals that modelers use might work.  Whatever I use, it wouldn't be more than 1/2 inch in diameter.  The question is, has anybody tried using a decal on the riser and then applying finish over it?  I plan on using Tru Oil as a finish per Bowdoc's suggestion.

Comments?  Suggestions?

I don't know about Tru-Oil but polyurethane will definitely work.

Truoil works fine. As per Bowdoc's direction, put a couple coats of TO on let dry, install your decall. After it is set, put more coats of TO on, after 2-3 more coats, you can lightly sand between coats with 600, just be carefull not to sand too much on top of the decall.
