Back in the game.
« on: August 21, 2018, 11:48:00 AM »
I went to bed on the Ides of March and woke up with my chest being squeezed. I had been having some symptoms, but I've never been the heart attack type. Slim (enough), no BP problems, eating well (lots of venison) etc. According to my docs it's genetic. My father died in his 40s, but apparently my lifestyle put it off a few years. I thought I was in the clear after reaching my 60s. I'll be 70 on my next birthday

That was 5 months ago. My recovery has been rapid since I was in relatively good shape, but it's only been within the last month that my chest has stopped paining me where it was split open for three bypasses and a stint. Today I strung my Archery Traditions Patriot II recurve with the 51# limbs and took a judo arrow into the yard. Folks, it felt so good to be shooting again! I need practice, but I'll be ready for the season opener on Oct. 1 here in MS. It will be my 55th consecutive bow season. Last season I was sluggish and didn't hunt as much as normal. and didn't get a deer. I'll do my best to make up for it this season!

Some of you are familiar with the arrow shafts my brother and I marketed 20 years ago as Superceders, with Dan Quillian as our marketing guy and advisor. I've been hoarding a small supply, but I'm ready to let go of some of them. Look for my ad in the classified when my contributing membership is approved.

I don't know when I've felt any better, so let the games begin!

Good luck Don, glad to see you are back at it.  You may find that even though you feel good you may not have the stamina that you had before the surgery.  The effects of the anesthetic last a LONG time.  Took me 9-10 months before I felt "good to go".

Similar genetics in my family.  I had a triple CABG in 2005 and just last January had to revisit those bypass grafts resulting in an atherectomy and 3 stents.  I figure I'm good to go for another 12-13 years.  I too will be 70 on my next BD.

Similar story here, but I got by (so far) with 2 stents (August 2). Tomorrow morning they are doing a follow up Cath to check on clots. They couldn’t get them all last time.

They said I was “on the verge of a massive heart attack”. Good prognosis though if the clots have dissolved. No damage.

Makes you appreciate every day you have! I’m 64.

Thanks, all. Good to know I'm not alone in this, sort of. :) I had 90% blockage in three arteries, and I was very lucky that it was a mild attack with minimal residual damage.

joebuck, keep hoarding- there won't be any more of that spine.

After being away from this forum for a few years while I was off adventuring, it's good to see so many names that I recognize. Says something about this site that people keep coming back. All well-wishing is most appreciated!

Even though I wasn't here, I was still bowhunting. Last year was the first year in a while that I had to resort to the bang-stick to get some venison in the freezer. I had slowed down with increasing age and a heart that was secretly clogging up, but when I retired three years ago I indulged in some wanderlust. I managed to make Montana this year, my 50th state! Bucket list: check. Back and forth across the country a couple of times with an impressive redhead (another story). Three trips to Alaska with her to one of her homes there, and in June we drove from Anchorage to Mississippi. That's a TRIP, folks! I saw Denali on a clear day before we headed back. Spent one winter in Anchorage, just for the experience. Moose, caribou, grizzly bears, black bears, Dall sheep... but no hunting. Alaska is tough for nonresidents, and all the territory this old man could reach without a guide service is reserved for resident hunters. I always managed to get back to the South for some deer hunting. I live in the woods, and the local deer population is increasing. A couple of good bucks on my cameras. Does under my apple trees every night. Come on, October! Enough rambling. I think I'll go drop the price on my arrow shaft ad and see if I can get some of them in good hands. Enjoy life, people, it may be shorter than you think!

Good luck this season.  I know the feeling - I'm fighting back from a torn bicep tendon/shoulder surgery.  great to be shooting, hoping to be shooting enough weight well enough to catch the back end of the season.
