Recurve Form Flaw
« on: August 17, 2018, 06:14:56 PM »
I've been shooting with a known form flaw for years that I'm going to try and work out. My form is accurate and consistent, but I lose arrow efficiency because my string makes contact with my arm guard on pretty much every shot.

For the past couple of days I've been working through different grips/stances/etc to try and get this kink worked out, but I'm not having much luck. My question to you technical recurve shooters: What's your bow grip look like? What's your stance? Etc. Why am I slapping my forearm even though I am trying to hold more similarly to a Howard Hill style grip?

Info on me:
-I shoot mainly recurves and they all have classic recurve handles (as opposed to a longbow or stick bow style handle)
-My stance is open
-I shoot with a mild can't
-3 fingers under

Thanks!
Matthew

Impossible to help without seeing -- video??  Best answer I can give is to suggest my video on this.

Are you rotating your elbow into a vertical position, so that it hinges horizontally?

X's 2 on a video would help.

How are you gripping the bow?

If your hand is too far in behind the grip, that could cause it.

Note how Arne grips the bow in his video!

Thank you everyone, and thank you Arne for posting your video. I've actually watched your form videos multiple times in the past. The grip you have in the video is how I'm trying to hold the bow (which is a little harder to do by nature of my riser handle).

I played around with it a little more today, had a little luck. If I can get a video shot, then I'll do my best to post it for all to see.

Thank you again!

Matthew

No disrespect to anyone here but it’s the grip in my opinion. You should imagine your hand making a stop sign. Close your fingers. Notice your knuckles are not in line w the riser. They shouldn’t be either. The heel of the hand also shouldn’t be on the riser.
As seen in video it’s gotta be an occasional problem for even the shooter as  there is an arm guard is worn. It’s not necessary and the correct grip with the elbow position down and off to side would elleviate the issues.
