Form critiques
« on: December 10, 2018, 08:02:56 PM »
My son and I want to use recurves next year. Here is our first attempt. Obviously we need a lot of work. Please point out our biggest flaws to work on.

You guys are having so much fun with this, I almost hate to mention it, but you can avoid hitting your man boobs by changing your alignment with the target.  You are standing a little too open to the target.  If you stand a little more closed to the target, the string will press against the side of your chest rather than across it.  Look at Dad in the very last shot: he’s doing it right!

I assume you are trying to use a fixed crawl.  Never seen anyone use it at this stage of the game.  Normally, you should touch your index finger to the bottom of the nock.  Maybe it’ll work out for you.

We watched “the push” video on YouTube and liked the idea of the fixed crawl. The main thing we were trying to work on was the release. Is it anywhere near correct? My first attempt at shooting felt like I was “plucking “ the string.

If I were you, I would put the fixed crawl on the back burner for a while and concentrate on basic form.  Using the fixed crawl at this point is sort of like doing a bank shot in pool before you learn to do a straight shot.

A pluck is when you release the string without relaxing your fingers, like you would pluck a guitar string. The reason you do this is because you’re losing back tension and want to get off the string before everything collapses. It’s sort of involuntary, otherwise why am I still doing it?  The cure is to maintain your back tension until the arrow hits the target.  The challenge is that you need to learn to relax your fingers without relaxing anything else.  The body thinks that because you’re relaxing your fingers, then everything else should relax too.  Focus on your back tension and make sure you don’t relax it until your arrow is in the target.

We have moved back to 10 yards. Haven’t had any tiddy thwacking incidents since the video.

I’m no expert and can’t help with form and shooting.
I did notice that when nocking the arrow , it seemed that it took a lot of pressure to get it attached to the string .
Good job , Dad , in keeping it fun !    Bruce
If you can shoot just one arrow in control, you can shoot all of them in control !

10 yards. What should your groups look like before you consider hunting.
