Doe in heat can call works the best for me.

I don't use scents, have had them spook more than one deer away.

I don't use scents either for the same reason, scared off too many deer. I keep a grunt call in my hunting pack and use it all season long. A fawn distress bleat works well in the early season but you better be ready because a doe will come in looking for a fight.

Good grunt tube that’s not as deep as many are. You want a buck to feel confident coming in

Several different calls....mostly like wooden ones...use to be a guy here that made them and was an assoc sponsor...man to I like his.  Wish I could remember who it was cause I'd like another....

Smokey's Deer Lure is all I use and have used for years.  Some of you that are spooking deer should read up a bit.....or ask Smokey himself.  Yes, the owner will talk to you.  Also, look up the Wensel boys rope trick with Smokey's  and read about it...there's a couple of threads here about it....Ill see if I can find one.

Oddly, I don't believe much in them, yet, I use them every year. Natural scents like urine and rut related scents, food smells, etc. are most common, but I also use vanilla and anise as attractants. I have had deer respond to them often but not always like I prefer. Sometimes they run to it, and other times they run from it (kind of like my rattling and grunt call efforts).

used a lot of calls and scents. Some will work some of the time , but not all of the time.
Have used vanilla and had deer follow it like they were on a string.
Grunted bucks that have ran away or ignored me, but had a PA buck charge to within 30 yds of me.

I like deer dander
But will experiment with anything, cause I just like to see what happens.
Had a call called a  kmere deer but broke it. It seemed to work well.

I'm curious if anybody has used calls successfully in CA.  Our hunts are either pre-rut (pre-rut might begin in the last 2 weeks of the general season) or very late in the rut (special draw, early December for an area that has an October rut).  Does are off-limits for most hunts as well.  Could calling work in these circumstances?
