Old Bear Grizzly Static ?
« on: March 29, 2008, 02:14:00 PM »
I was at a friends house today, who pulled out his Dad's old recurve.  It had a woven glass back, osage core, osage belly, with a brass or aluminum strip under the thin osage belly lam.

The serial number is 5748.  52#.  Very good condition.

Anyone ever see one that looks like this.  When it was made? Possible value?

Thank you,

Java Man

1950-1951 it sold new for 37.50..and it should be aluminum & cherrywood, with early cross weave fiberglass. Also most likely maple corewood with some very aged yellow varnish finish on it...Makeing it look somewhat osage-ish..Pretty cool bows there, but you may mention to your friend...Bear Archery only used the aluminum one year in bows....and if he shoots it to much or maybe even just stringing them sometimes...he will see why they only used aluminum one year..Those bows did not hold together very well or for very long...The glues did not bond to the aluminum.Value today somewhere 100.00-200.00 give or take a few bucks eather way.And pending on how things are selling that day..bowdoc

Bowdoc,

As soon as I saw it, I told him it could not be shot.  Mr. LaClair told me about the aluminum issue one time.  I figured it was aluminum, but has that yellowish look to it.  Must be from the varnish.

Thank you,
