Question about Packing String for Travel

Hey folks... new to traditional archery and still figuring things out. I have a question related to traveling with a takedown bow. I have a case for my limbs and my riser. There is a zippered pocket in the case that I’d like to put the string in. But, I don’t really know what is the best way to fold up or coil up the string to keep the twists from coming out (or doing something else bad to it that I am not even thinking of). Would really appreciate advice. Thanks in advance.

Hi, Jimmy.  Glad you have come aboard.  I just fold the string at the end of the center serving and make the bundle just the same length then as the center serving and fold the string up that way.  I don't think you will have any problem with the string untwisting.  You can always use a little twist tie to hold everything in place. You should always have a way to check your brace height any way from time to time, so either carry a bow square in your zip pocket or use the old time measure of "fistmele" by placing your fist on the shelf or the deepest point of your grip which ever you prefer, with your thumb pointing toward the string, and note what the distance is.  I hope you enjoy trad archery as much as the other fanatics on here and feel free to ask questions.  We all were new to it once upon a time.

I just use a paper clip an put the loop ends through it. And I always try not to set the center serving where it will bend to much.

Try not to bend the serving. Usually there is no problem but you might get slight separation if there's a bend that's too acute. Otherwise strings are very durable. I do as above, get a ziplock bag long enough to accommodate the serving length and fold the rest of the string around it.

I put my tab and strings in my pocket I measure the string and when I to where I am hunting I string my bow make sure my brace height is correct.

i put one end through the other on the string and fold it up

I usually use a twist tie to tie the ends together and keep the right number of twists in the string and then I put it in a travel toothbrush container.

Jimmy - Folding your string isn't all that critical....don't bend the serving if you can help it. The important thing is to record your brace height, bring along your bow square, and when you reassemble make sure all is where it should be. Be sure and SHOOT the bow a bit before you hunt, double checking the bow isn't out of tune.

Thanks for the help. Sounds like most people agree on not bending the serving, so I’ll fold it in a way that avoids it.

I’ve figure out that 8” is what my bow likes for brace height and in figuring that out I’ve gotten pretty good using a bow square to adjust it. Good advice on shooting before hunting. Appreciate that as well.
