Getting close on this hickory bow. Question for you guys
« on: December 07, 2018, 05:02:52 PM »
Here are links. Still photo trouble. Sorry

Right now 40lbs is pulling 24 inches and I still have to do final sanding. At my draw of 27.5 inches its at 49lbs. Im making it for a 31" draw and shooting for 50lbs. Right now according to my calculations that would put me at 57.5lbs. Do yall think i should take any more off before the final sanding with high grit? 31" draw is a little out of my wheelhouse. It's hickory pecan with walnut handle. 68 inch groove to groove, 69" total. Thanks

I would drop another 3 to 4 pounds now, then final sand.

Link below explains posting pictures and then some.

If using a cell phone for pictures, go into the cameras setting and choose a much lower picture size.

Roy are you using an Iphone?  I don't see where you can change the size of the picture in the camera settings on mine.  I have to download my pictures to my computer and reduce their size in Paint.

Looks pretty good there Keith.  What kind of tiller do you have?  Looks like the top limb is bending more is why I'm asking.
I like to get to final weight 1" before final draw length.  Final sanding and shooting will bring it pretty close to your goal.

But yeah, sanding 3 or 4 pounds now like Roy said should get you close.

Thanks! I just saw that about the photo settings and changed them so when my wife can take another pic I'll try that out. Yeah, i was thinking about giving it one more light go on each limb. Top limb is bending just slightly more than the bottom by the amount i usually like so i had some wishful thinking going on to not screw it up! It's all about going slow i guess. How's the tiller looking to you? My bottom limb is shorter so they always bend a little more. Thanks for your and anyone else's input! For my friend's father-in-law so i really want to get it just right.

Yeah, the shelf is center, 2.5" to fades above and 4.5" handle below so my bottom limbs bend a little more. That's just how I've always done it but good eye! You're not the first to ask about that!!!! I've always been a little off lol!!!

Oh wait, thats opposite. So my bottom limbs do have to bend a little extra but i leave the bottom 1/8th to 1/4 inch stiffer at braced height. Gives me a nice cast. You can see on the floor pic the top limb is about 1/4 past the bottom. When drawn my bottom limbs look like they bend more. Crazy, i know

Yeah you are essentially making your top limb longer and bottom limb shorter when offsetting the handle like that.   A shorter limb is stiffer(all else being equal) so what you are seeing makes sense.  The shorter bottom is stiffer at brace, hence the positive tiller, and it has to bend more since it is shorter, so it will look like it's bending more at draw.

So it's 1/4" positive right now?  I think it may be a touch too much positive tiller.

That's the only thing I see man.  Tiller looks pretty good otherwise.

Never knew how to put words to it, but yup, you understand where I'm coming from. Ill try to bring the difference down to about an eighth when done. Thank you sir! You're a scholar and a gentleman!

No problem but you sound like my Dad now!
I like to have it balanced in my hand at full draw.  If you feel more handle pressure from the bottom of your palm when you draw then the bottom limb is too strong (and vice versa), which I think may be the case here.  And the strong limb will bend more to you.  It normally comes out to a slight positive tiller but I don't really care what it is as long as it's balanced.  Roy and Bowjunkie taught me that  :bigsmyl:

Your right Ben. The IPhone doesn’t have size settings. I got  a free app for image resizing. Took me several attempts to get the setting right for posting pics here. But after that works great and is easy. Just choose your pic, resize, and it will send  a copy back to your library. Looks the same, just smaller file size.

if you are only 7.5lbs away from your goal you need to do all sanding now. you can easily lose up to 5lbs sanding and you haven't shot the bow in yet. rule of thumb I use is get bow tillered 10# over weight a few inches short of full draw. then start sanding and get bow fully sanded. this can very easily get me at goal weight an inch or 2 short of final draw. shooting the bow in usually takes care of those last few inches
