Finish issues
« on: November 29, 2018, 11:11:47 AM »
Finished or should I say refinished one of my bows after I reshaped the grip and riser..sanded it all down cleaned it acetone then sprayed a light coat of polyurethane on it says it should dry in a couple hours after 24 its still little tacky. Everything is room temperature the wood isnt a oily type as its shedua. Was wondering if anyone else has had this issue? I haven't used this finish in the past....thanks

Dry time and cure time are never the same. I would make sure it stays warm and give it a couple of days.
What exactly is the finish base, brand and sheen?

With some of the tropicals standard finishes don't seem to cure out. You may try removing what you added, coat with shellac first then re-install the finish.

Urethane comes in both flavors. There are many factors that can affect the dry/cure time of finishes. Temperature, humidity, age of the product. Also, rattle cans have extra solvents in them, so they  atomize(spray). Depending on what the old finish was and how throughly it was removed can have a big effect also. All those solvents will soften the remaning old finish, which can get trapped under the new finish. Not letting one coat dry before applying more coats, can have the same trapping effect. Give it some time and if it does not cure out, do what Pat B. said. Shellac is a universal sealer/bridge coat, but make sure it is dewaxed, or you will be very sad.

I had a piece of Shedua that poly didn't dry on so some of it may be a bit oily...
Stay sharp, Kenny.

Well I let riser set for another day and it actually dried real nice. Guess may be patience is to be desired here. After that I was able to spray 3 coats of satin letting it dry at least I hrs between coats and it did turn out to be pretty nice.....thank every one for the good advice ...
