Best place to buy a snakey Osage stave?
« on: January 30, 2019, 10:57:36 PM »
I came across a website a few years ago that had a bunch of Osage staves and their various conditions and quirks listed with photos.  I can’t remember what the site was called and can’t find it again.  Anyone have any recommendations on a good place to get snakey Osage staves? Cutting one down isn’t an option for me at the moment.

Mike Yancy sells osage staves sometimes. You might contact him.

What part of Missouri are you from?  If you are near the NW corner, I may have an extra or 2 that you could have for free. Let me know if you are interested and I'll go check my pile.

I am in the St. Louis area, Wind D Ranch.  I wish I was in the NW corner though!  I love it up that way.

Mojam in July, there will be plenty of snakey staves.  What part of St. Louis do you live in.  I am in North county and may have something.  Will have to check my stash.

I'll second the vote for Mojam. Plenty of staves and a darned good time as well.

You mean like this one? It was a fence post for 60 years and was given to me about 5 years ago at the Tenn. Classic.
Unfortunately you can't have it.  :saywhat:  It's already promised and a bow will be attempted with it at the Tenn. Classic this spring. You can see where I attempted to use a draw knife on it but gave up. It is extremely hard.

Good snaky staves are hard to find and getting a bow out of one can be as hard. Not the same animal as a straight stave. There is a good chance that this one will never make a bow but we are going to try our best. Sometimes the best bet is sister billets that can be spliced at the handle.
