I'm getting ready to order some wood arrows. Here's what I'm looking at: these are in no specific order.

1)Laminated Birch (Elite arrows)

2)Ash (Raptor archery)

3)Hexwood - footed (Whispering wind arrows)

I'm shooting a Turkey Creek longbow, 60" 48# @28, 450+, cut to center. Shooting a 29" shaft right now. I'd like to shoot a 160gr or heavier BH(Magnus I). Leaning toward a 4 4"@90 parabolic fletch.

***I'll be limiting myself to 15-18yd shots max! Been improving at 15 but still have a ways to go.

Being very new to trad archery I'd appreciate any feedback you all may have. From what I've read - it seems all of the above will work fine I would just like to hear what you guys prefer, success you've had with these etc.

My apologies if I've left out any info. Your spine weight, fletch combo, BH rec's will all help me decide. Plan on getting my order in by the end of the week.

I have had good results with 50-55 5/16 lam birch, with my 58lb. longbow @26'' with 160 grain broadheads. I was disappointed hex pines I tried. I much prefer tapered cedar to anything else, Wapiti Archery.

I like regular birch better than laminated. Ash is also fine. Having said that, I shoot mostly cedars. Doug firs make a good inbetween shaft, inbetween cedars and hardwoods in weight and toughness.

The only one of your choices that I have experience with are tapered ash from Raptor. Ted does a good job and is super to deal with. Give him a call and see what he recommends.

Both the lam birch and the ash are going to give you a heavy arrow, at least 600 gr and most likely closer to 700 gr. I like heavy arrows, but these are going to be a lot for 48 lb to handle nicely. Of your choices, I would strongly recommend the pine. With the heavier heads you will have more than enuf arrow weight for deer and bigger game. Talk with Bob and go with his recommendation on spine. He can put you right on the money.

My finished ash arrows are running around 600 grains. I am shooting them from a 46 pound bow, and am very happy with the flight. A bit slower than a 2013. Enough to notice, but not a lot. They sure do thump!
I use a 4.5" shield, three-fletch.

I thought if my shots are mostly close range that the heavy arrow would help stabilize, quiet, etc?? The momentum and mass is what I'm looking for. I'll compromise speed for the hitting power, no?

Can't go wrong with arrows from Elite or Raptor. Both make a fine arrow. If you like "pretty arrows", go with Elite. I had a hard time letting the first one loose. I was afraid it would get messed up. Either Paul or Ted are great for info over the phone.

I would go with Elite, Sitka spruce or cedar. Pretty easy to get a 550-600 gr arrow with them and a 160 gr pt. That is plent of arrow for that bow.

Pauls arrows are second to none.
