I am driving down to Nashville, TN in the morning to visit my new grandson! I think that while he is napping, I will head over the the REI store and try on some boots. They have a good selection and carry some of the brands that have been mentioned here. I will let you know what I find..........thanks, Mike

I had a pair of Mason's before.  A good sturdy boot.  Yes, they offer "wierd" sizes.

Mike

You might give Lathrop and Sons a call.  They're out of Robinson, Illinois.  They have a web site and seem to do some custom fitting.  I met them several years ago at the Compton's shoot and they seemed like pretty good fellows.

I guess if we run into the bear that is making these tracks, we oughta just get off the trail.......He seems to like it!

While in TN last weekend I went to the REI store and tried every boot they had in their WIDE sizes. Absolutely nothing fit me. Montrail, Asolo and all the big names, everything was way too narrow. The folks their were very helpful and suggested I try the New Balance store a few miles away. The fellar there told me that New Balance/Dunham has been getting more into the hiking/outdoor boot arena due to the fact that they do offer sizing upto 6E in some models. I ended up with a pair of model 977s....all leather in 11 4E. That is actually a 1/2 to a full size smaller than I usually buy, but I think finding the proper width makes the difference. I have not worn them outside yet, but plan to start doing some hiking with my packframe + 25-30# this week. If anyone is interested, I can report back later. Mike

I wear the 8.5 7in outfitter to work in, this is my forth pair, very good boot, can stand up to a lot of abuse. Only flaw, they keep my wife talking about what comes off the soles on the floors.
