Info for area 71 in Colorado

Planning on hunting opening weekend of elk season in Colorado north of Delores in area 71 any one have some suggestions on hot spots. Anyone hunted that area before.

hunted 711 last year first week. we took 4 bulls out of 6 hunters. Find some water and dont leave it.

Normally I would agree with bohunter97 except this year there are massive amounts of snow up there so they may have better access to water. Not to deter you from that tactic, just to keep you informed. I am not real familiar with that area. I have an uncle that was the game warden for that area for 23 years, just retired last fall. He has shown me a couple spots that he said always hold some elk. Try the ridges south west of Rico There are a couple of bowls up there that face mainly west. While you are up there keep an eye open for the mushrooms. They got some good ones in that area. Shaggy mane's, Boletas, and a few more that I cant think of the name for right now. Also may want to get a small game permit as the blue grouse are excellent table fair.

Thanks for the tips. It has been 14 yrs. since I been up in Colorado chasing elk and cant wait.

Any more info out there.  :campfire:    :archer:
