Author Topic: Preferences for any brand of feather fletchings? Gateway or Tru-flight?  (Read 2232 times)

I recently got a pack of the new tre camo colored Gateway Feathers. Honestly I didn't even look what brand they were when I ordered them. I didn't even know what kind I was using all these years until I looked. They are 5" shield. The cut is slightly larger than Tru-flight that I have been getting for years. I like cut, it seems like a little more bite in the wind. Who knows. They Gateway seem to have a sheen in the sun. Just wondering if anyone ever noticed any difference at all in durability, wet resistance, noise...etc, or have any preference for some reason?
Thanks,
Tedd

Well, my preference after using all kinds is for Sagittarius Archery feathers--much more reasonable cost ($30 per 100) and best quality quill trim and color saturation I have had.

I use a Bearpaw feather chopper which was designed to be similar to a Vario Clipper, which doesn't seem to be available anymore.  It makes a very precise cut, but requires a certain thickness of quill to work properly.  Tru-flight quills fit, but the one pack of Gateway feathers I tried had quills that were ground too thick to fit.  My only complaint about Tru-flight feathers is that many of them are too short to get two 4” fletches from.  I remember when they announced that they were sorry, but due to the lack of availability of suitable feathers, they were going to start mixing in shorter ones.  Well, at least they announced it in advance, and didn't try to slip it by us.

Nothing better than wild turkey wings.

The blue one in Gatway, the whites are Truflight. The Gateway is about 3/16"-1/4" longer overall. Slightly fuller profile towards the front. I wasn't sure how that new color would look but it is ok.

To be honest, whatever is the color I want at that moment. I just bought a pack of Ozark feathers cause I liked the cut and the color Scheme. I use a lot of the flo yellow Gateway Feathers as well cause the wraps I get from One Stringer match perfect. I know the quills can be an issue but I sand them if necessary. I have enough time to take time to make things work. Yes, I have and use trueflight as well.

I like Sagittarius parabolic if I’m not chopping, but usually use whatever I find cheapest.  Headed to bear camp with truflight I found cheap at Cabelas.

I have used both Gateway and Trueflight. I currently use Gateway because I got a steal of a deal on a whole bunch of them a few years ago ($10/100 of the tre yellow), and I couldn't pass it up!!! While I do believe that the Trueflights are more consistently ground, I have found that they both work equally. So, when I have to buy more,I would probably go with whichever I could get the best deal on.

I try and stick with tru flite as I find gateways quills are too thick. I tend to sand all the feather quills down anyway to make them thinner, even tru flite. I don't like to mix feather brands as the cut isn't the same.

Bisch, I just bought 50 for $16.50 thinking that was a great deal! Holy cow, no wonder you loaded up on them.

I’m not a gateway fan. Quill just isn’t to my liking.
