Got a real scare !
« on: May 29, 2019, 02:50:23 AM »
I have been having a real dozy of a time with my toelke recurve. I have gone through highs and lows and got my form sorted. This morning while shooting the second arrow I heard loud noise , got a whack across the clavicle and saw the arrow fall at my feet.
Looking closer I saw that the bow string parted at the nock point. I recovered one piece a few foot ahead of me and the other I couldn't find. Checked the bow very carefully and found no issues
Sent of a mail to Dan toelke and apprised him. He also felt that the bow should be fine. Strapped on the spare string and drew tentatively to check for creaks and unnaturally flexing parts.
All ok and I seem to have dodged a bullet.
The second part (top half) of the string fell out of a tree around 15 minutes later.

On examination the bowstring frayed below the centre serving where the tie on nock was placed.

My question - would a Flemish twist have been advantageous in such a scenario in that it would have unwound and not parted through?

I'm certainly glad you were not hurt. I have no idea, though, if a different string would have lasted longer.

be careful if you use super glue when tying on nocks. It's not friendly to the string material.  I use super glue but only the gel type for nocking points.

I don’t think it would have made that much difference. I have had a couple Flemish strings break over the years. Sometimes they snap like yours did, and sometimes they untwist, giving you a warning before they actually break clean.

Glad you and the bow were not hurt!!!

thanks guys !
i do not use any glue , just mono filament and the melt the ends with an ember on the end of a tooth pick.
i have put the toelke on R&R pending my delivery of another string (i always keep 02 strings in hand). its a measure of the gents confidence in his work that he was sure that the bow would be ok. i percussed the bow tpo hear for any incipient delam as we do with vintage rotors and feel we have no issues.
this incident makes you wonder about eye protection !
