Messing with More Old Bows
« on: June 06, 2019, 10:03:51 AM »
Changed the grip on two more old 58" recurves and reduced the weight on the Hoyt Pro Hunter from 47# to 40#@28.  Now they feel good in the hand and shoot great at my 40#@28...tippit

Those risers look great.  Nice work. I’m also curious as to how many “old bows” you have.  Your collection seems never ending.

Way too many bows...that's why I have no problem taking them to my knife grinder. Most were collected while I was still working...now need to start dispersing to save my kids from that headache.

Didn’t I see on another post that you have a new pup on the way?  You better get busy with the bows. That dog will take up all your time once it shows up.

Nate,
After losing my wirehaired Dachshund a year ago to leukemia, I'm getting one of the Jeanneney's WHD pups.  Both of my Dachshunds Tilly & Cash were out of their line.  I'll be picking up Pipa July 1st...can't wait!!  Bow work is just a distraction, no problem interfering with training Pipa to track.  My freezer is has all the venison, hides, and blood ready to go plus some wild hog too.

I’ve been watching Jolanta’s posts. She has her hands full. It will be a blast.

She sure does...two litters at one time.  I'm getting a female from the first litter.  Jolanta picks the pup from what you describe you're looking for.

Yep and she does a great job of it too. Our Yogi turns 3 next month. He’s a deer tracking, rabbit running, face licking fool.

Was Yogi one of theirs?  They didn't have a breeding last year.  I've been talking with Jolanta since Cash passed on.  With John's health, I wanted to make sure I could have one more of their WHD.  At 73, Pipa could be my last hunting/tracking dog.

Tippit, what do you put on for an over coat/sealer after you reshape the riser/grip. Thank you.

Yep from their 2016 breeding of Tommy and Tuesday. They are certainly some special dogs.  I think that I would still think of this dog as your next one.   :bigsmyl:

Alan,
I use TruOil.  You can apply it right over old finish too.  Also use it on all my knives handles too.  I wipe it on with a paper towel and immediately wipe it off with a dry paper towel.  No sanding in between coats and you can add another coat in about an hour.

PS:  Where in Maine are you?  We have a cottage on Great East lake, Acton, ME (1/2 Maine  1/2 NH)

Like that Nate. Picked up my pup,  a Springer,  on the 25th on my way home from bear hunting. thought it was going to be my last but...
I don't see myself making any bows in the near future
