Need Help What Animal Bone IsThis *****
« on: April 06, 2008, 07:46:00 PM »
I found this bone in the boundary Waters of Minnesota, it was not near a kill, or any other bones.  I have had it for about 12 years.  And never identified it.

What kind of animal do think it is ?

Thanks for your help in identifying this

Part of a beaver pelvis?
Long, long afterward, in an oak I found the arrow, still unbroke;
And the song, from beginning to end, I found again in the heart of a friend.

Killdeer,

A googeled it, know that's not it, the Beaver pelvis bone is much wider and longer.

Thanks,

Carl

It appears to be broken, which would account for it's being thinner.....

I would have to agree with Killy,I believe it's part of a beaver pelvis.
I only shoot WOOD arrows... My kid makes them, fast as I can break them!

Not that you mention that it is broken off, so it could be.

It was found in an area where other people do not go, we purposely went where there were no campsites, we went about two or three lakes in, and we crossed two beaver dams to get there.  It was way off the beaten track, and that's the way we like it.

It is part of the ulna of the fore leg of some critter.  In the picture with your finger in it the broken end is to the right.  I can't tell from the size perspective if it might have been a small deer or a dog.  The picture that looks like a pelvic acetabulum "socket"(the one right below the one with fingers) is actually where the condyle of the humerus attaches.  The other facet on the finger picture view is where the proximal end of the radius attaches.  Hope this helps, and there is not a doubt in my mind about it.  I can't be certain of the species however.  Bill

WOW, I am really glad of that, for a while I thought Hollywood lost ET LOL

It's been hard to look up on the Internet, because they don't give images.  I thought it was a realy small wolf or coyote.  I think what I will do is take to the University, and see if those brainiac's can come up with something.  Just to see what it really is, it's just interesting.  As I was posting this, a thought crossed my mind, what if it was human !

I would never be able to tell them where exactly I found it.

And it is great to have the knowledge of the people on this site.  Thanks William

It has some interesting angles on it; and it has been damaged; which effects the length and width.
It looks like a pelvic bone to me.
I would take it to someone who knows bones; at a university - or someone the police recommend; because if its human; it could be part of a crime scene.
THE VOICES HAVEN'T BOTHERED ME SINCE I STARTED POKING THEM WITH A Q-TIP.
