Fred Bear Quote
« on: April 07, 2008, 05:18:00 AM »
Does anyone know where--which book or article--the following Fred Bear quote first appeared?

"Not only is bowhunting fun and a real challenge, but it’s good for you.  The exercise in the fresh air the chance to get away from everyday pressures and problems, a return to the basic relationships between man and his environment."

Anybody else have a favorite Bear quote of their own?

"I hunt because I love the entire process: the preparations, the excitement, and sustained suspense of trying to match my woodslore against the finely honed instincts of these creatures. On most days spent in the woods, I come home with an honestly earned feeling that something good has taken place. It makes no difference whether or not I got anything: it has to do with how the day was spent."

I really like the one that's in the Fred Bear song from Ted Nugent... I forget how it goes but He's talking about the youths and the North Woods

Sorry can't answer your question.

I do like VTer's! Always thinkin...  :bigsmyl:

I met him once, in the '70s, at a shoot in Grifton, NC.
I was young and awestruck. Wish I'd gotten his autograph.
He did tell me to, "Pick a spot."
I had a Ben Pearson Hunter, recurve. He could have said, "Buy a bear, kid."   :archer:
Happy trails....   ('till we meet again, Dale Evans Rogers)

I was at a Ted Nugent concert once quite a while back, and he started to play the song  "Fred Bear", and the reaction from the crowd was deafening. Then Ted smiled and said he was glad to hear everyone liked the song.

He then said the song was written in honor of an
AMERICAN HERO, and it took twenty minutes for the place to calm down.

I won`t ever forget that.

Mysticguido, I believe it goes like this: "If some of today`s teenage thrillseekers really want to go out and get a thrill, let them go up into the northwest, and tangle with a Grizzly bear, a Polar bear, or a Brown bear... they will get their thrill, and it will cleanse their soul".

I was talking with him once; and asked him if he wanted to be remembered for any one quote; what would it be?
He pondered it for a few minutes; and I was thinking something like most of the quotes above.
He looked at me really seriously and said :
 "pick a spot."
At the time I was kind of disapointed; but the more I bowhunt; the more I realize that it does come down to that one thing.

Sorry, B. Butz, can't answer your question, but here is "my" Bear-quote:

"To the housewife a piece of meat wrapped neatly in plastic has no more emotional effect than a bunch of carrots. But let someone say he is going hunting and her heart bleeds with sympathy for the game. " Fred Bear

Kinda off subject maybe but I received a catalog yesterday that has some throw pillows in it one has the Fred Bear quote "Go Afield with good attitude and with respect for the wildlife you hunt, and for the forest and fields in which you walk" Camo on the back, kinda cool. Another pillow has this (not a Bear quote but I like it) Treestands dont demand, Treestands dont complain, Treestands simply ask me to sit down and listen.

What I love about the quite by Fred at the end of Nuge's song is it was from the sixties(if I remember correctly)... and still applicable today, even more so I would guess.     :readit:

Love him or leave him... I tingle each and every time I hear the opening chords of Nuge's "Fred Bear" it means more to me than a song about an archery legend.. it brings my feelings toward my grandfather into song/lyrics.

If this song do get your fire going... you must have wet wood.     :biglaugh:

Take care and Happy Hunting!
