Border Hex6 limbs for Bear Take Down?
« on: July 22, 2019, 01:32:34 PM »
I recently acquired a set of Border Hex 6 limbs for my Bear TD. I'm very happy with my limbs but do have a few questions. The limbs are marked 58" A-50#. I own both A and B mag risers and a newer black and red B riser. Border stopped making custom limbs for Bear recurves around 2013/14. I gather that my limbs are considered medium limbs(#2) which make a 62" bow on a B riser, 58" on an A riser. I would be interested in any info available on these limbs. Particularly interested in recommended brace height on both A and B risers. The limbs are marked for an A riser with no mention of a B riser. Also, is there any reason these limbs should not be used on the older magnesium risers. I would appreciate any info the TG community could supply.

Bill you may want to email Sid at Border and ask him. He has always responded to questions for me.

I can’t see your mag riser posing any problems whatsoever for those limbs.  Border limbs tend to like a much smaller brace height then their contemporary cousins. You may want to start out right around 6 5/8 to 7 inches and tune from there.  My last set of Border Hex 8h’s liked 6.5 YMMV

I second getting hold of Border. One of my shooting buddies has a set on a “C” Mag riser. Makes a 70” bow, nice shooter.

The information I received from Border was that a "minus 2 inch" string will put the Bear TD with Border limbs at or near the best brace height. My combo has an A riser and is listed on the limbs as making a 60" bow. I use a 58" string and it shoots great.

By the way, my set up shoots best with a brace height around 8 inches. That is with a minus-2 string.

Good info for sure. I will be contacting Sid but I wanted to get input from my TG brothers/sisters first. With my "B" riser, my  Border limbs make a 62" recurve, 48@28. I'm using a 7" brace height and hearing a slight click at release, unless I cant my bow to about two oclock. If I cant I do not hear the click. The problem might be in my release. I'm hesitant to untwist my string any further. Have already taken most of the twist out while adjusting brace height. All input is appreciated. :dunno:

On his other limbs and bows Border runs a 6 1/2"-7" brace height.
Definitely contact Border about recommended brace height.

And also check on string material.  On all of my Borders they ONLY cover strings made from D97 (FF+) or now 8125.
They like a bit of string stretch as the string comes around the big hooks.
I absolutely recommend you reach out to Steve Baker at Montain Muffler strings.  He makes flemish strings specificaly for Border bows.  He uses the correct materials and makes longer tag ends and padded loops as well as the Mufflers.

And congrats on scoring a great set of limbs for the Bear riser.  The performance difference between the Borders and Bear limbs will amaze you.

Thank you "Wheels". I've been looking for some #2 limbs for my B riser and stumbled on these. Really prefer a 62" recurve. Once I get them tuned I'll love'um I'm sure.

Interesting discovery regarding my Border Hex 6 limbs marked A:50@28. These limbs must be machined to work best on an A- Bear riser. They fit my B-riser, but are just too loud. After a few weeks of trying to quiet them down, I tried them on my A mag. Fit perfectly and shot lights out. No noise. Problem solved. My #3 Bear limbs perform equally well on both the A&B Bear risers but not these Border #2 limbs. They appear to be riser specific. On another note, Border recommends these limbs be braced between 6.5 and 7 inches on an A riser. Problem solved. Thanks for your help.  :banghead:

Your comments about the limbs being riser specific is one reason they are not available anymore. Ther was talk about sending your riser to Border and having the limbs fitted there. I am thinking that’s a lot of hassle and extra expense most would shy away from.
I do know if you order ILF limbs they will ask what length riser they are for.
You have a good find there. Worth whatever they cost you IMO.

The riser length must be the culprit. It was my understanding that Border did not require the riser to be sent in for fitting but the limbs were made to perform with either an A or B riser, not both. Regardless, my Border limbs are great performers on my A riser. I'm happy to have them.
