Fletching cutting my bow hand
« on: August 01, 2019, 11:12:17 AM »
This might sound dumb. I am new to this Trad shooting. I purchased a use 58" 45# Bear Grizzly. Figured this would be a good bow to learn with. I am having problems with the feathers cutting my bow hand right behind my index finger knuckle. I have tried to turn the arrow nocks and re position the feathers. NO luck! Any ideas what is causing this? I have watched several guys shoot with no shelf on the bow at all. I cant figure it out. I dont think my bow arm grip is the issue. Only thing I am wondering is if maybe my nocking point may need to be raised, yet my arrows seem to fly fairly well from the string. Any help would be much appreciated.

With a razor blade, bevel the angle of the quill of the feather that is causing the problem (and the other two if you want to) so it smoothly mates with the shaft, with nothing sticking out to snag your finger. Then put a drop of glue on it and let it dry. Then burnish the glue down with the back of a teaspoon or something until it is flat.

If that doesn’t work, wear a thin glove, like a golf glove, on your bow hand.

You should be using a 5/8” nocking point and nocking under the nock point until you figure out something you like better.

So, You are saying that it could be the type of feathers I have on my arrows?

The feathers are probably okay, but the quill may not be trimmed properly where it meets the arrow shaft. Or it may not have been glued down so it fits flat against the shaft.

Your problem is not uncommon.  Dave gave the same advice I would have.  I've found in most cases it's more of a "too low" nockset.
