Tanto tip?
«
on:

Hey all, never tried this before, but I was thinking about putting a tanto tip on my STOS's.
Is there a certain way to make this happen?
Thanks,
Keith

Keith,
I really like the Stos heads and I put a tanto on by first truing the arrow (I find it easier with the factory point on) then I use a bastard file on all four sides of the head taking off just a little at a time. I mostly go by feel. So far it's worked well. I have a friend that has modified his Lansky sharpener with the proper angle and it works even better.

I think "truing the arrow" means making sure it spins perfectly with the head mounted.
I like to make a tanto tip on a double bevel head by first filing the tanto shape perpendicular to the edge. Once I'm happy with the point angles, I put the edge on the sides I just formed by filing.

I do this, which is essentially what Horne Shooter described I believe.

Bernie and SlowbowinMO are both right. I also noticed the tip on SlowbowinMO's STOS is exactly how I try to get mine to look. Not too much taken off the front, just enough to remove the point.

Tim's is about identical to the Tanto I added to the STOS during testing. That's what you want it to look like on a STOS.
However, "Tanto" is just the profile. You can have a wide Tanto or a narrow Tanto. I'm still experimenting with both the angle of attack of the Tanto and the best sharpening angle and pattern for the Tanto, and have a number of test planned for this year to investigate these.
