Barry Wensel April Bootcamp
« on: April 08, 2008, 08:58:00 PM »
"Tdog" and I just got back.We both really enjoyed it and learned some good tips that we plan on employing this coming season.Barry, and Gene too I'm sure, knows how to get close to deer and they get to hunt and take some giants...or "gaggers" as Barry calls them.Just walking the same woods that deer like that roam was a thrill.
Got to meet and talk with good people from all over and it seemed like everyone was glad they had come.Anyway, here are some pics.

Here's Barry at the base of one of his stands explaining how the deer move around on this property.

One of many big rubs.

The whole gang.

The teacher on the 1st day which was all in class...the other 2 were on the farms that the Wensels hunt.

This was 1 of a group of 3 possums that we stumbled upon and when we first saw them, well, let's just say that it looked like the the peak of the possum rut in Iowa was in full swing. When one of the young boys asked "what are they doing" Barry replied "they're wrestling."

This happy young fella is Ethan. He and his little brother Tyler managed to find a few sheds while out on the farms...the next morning Barry showed up at the lodge with 3 matched sets of antlers for the boys and I got this pic.You can tell that Barry enjoys kids and they got a kick out of all the joking around he did with them.

I had a great time out there. The place we stayed was increadable, Kristine's cooking was to die for.I'm really glad we did it. Learned alot and Barry let us in on the secret of shooting big whitetail bucks. What a great guy and could go on forever with the stories. Barry thanks for taking us out and showing us how it's done.. Tdog..

I too have always wanted to attend this.  Sounds like a great time with some priceless advice being given on how to hunt big whitetail bucks.  One of my favorite things about Gene and Barry is the way they are still so passionate about it after all these years.  I hope I'm still the same when I reach their age.

From the letter I recived when I sighed up for this class. Barry said this was the last boot camp he was doing. I'm glad I got in when I did. To think I was in the last bootcamp that Barry gave is very humbling. I would not have missed it for the world. Jeff I love the shot of the oppossum. Barry thank you again for your time.  Tdog

I agree with hogdancer.  I really hope it's not the last one!  Couldn't swing it this year but I'd definitely sign up if Barry runs the boot camp again.  One more!!!

Thanks for the positive feedback. I get a lot of self-satisfaction when guys tell me how I've apparently helped their future whitetail ventures. I need to apologize for not getting on here sooner. During the bootcamp I was not feeling too well. The day after, I ended up with a brochial infection and have been flat on my back since. I went to the doc Monday got a shot and am now on a couple prescriptions. Today is better but I'm sure glad I don't have another bootcamp starting tomorrow. This was my sixth year of doing the whitetail bootcamps and must admit it's been a lot of fun. I'm constantly blown away with the desire and dedication "students of the whitetail" have shown me. To have shared the knowledge, handing down woodsmanship skills and hunting techniques to future generations has been a real privilege. You guys have been great. I hope you all get to shoot the biggest bucks of your life next season. Many thanks again. BW

Get better Barry. Turkey season is right around the corner. On the way up Rt61 it seemed like every field Jeff and I looked out in too there stood a couple Toms with the hens..Looks like a good place to chase the birds. Biggie you say we wore him out. After following Barry through the woods and field I felt like I was in boot camp. That man can travel. Barry Thanks again Feel better..Maybe some Turkey soup would help..Hey Barry that stuff about Ishi that wasn't true was it? Thanks again...Tdog
