Suggestions for face net
« on: October 17, 2019, 02:15:10 PM »
A few years ago, I purchased a camo cap with a mesh face net attached to the brim. I felt this was essential due to the fact I wear eyeglasses all the time and chose a hat/net combo with no eye opening for that reason. During *normal* lighting conditions, I can see adequately (but not completely clear, obviously...it's what I would call "tolerable"...) but the back (inner) side of the camo mesh is white, and in lower sun position settings, like early morning or evening, the sun lights the back side of the mesh up like a Christmas tree and creates a glare that is blinding...I can't see a thing and end up stuffing the net under the hat which leaves me just wearing a camo hat. I tried blackening the inside of the mesh using soot from a recent forest burn, which helped, but did not eliminate the problem. Does anyone have the same issues, and possibly a solution?

I was going to jump in and say, switch to camo face paint then realized that the issue for you is your glasses.  I have been wearing glasses while hunting for many years and don't believe I have ever had a problem with being busted because of them.  Well, there was one time a big 10 point came down the side of a hill with the sun rising behind him and he suddenly stopped about level with me in my stand and appeared to stare right through me before he eased off in another direction.  I suppose it could have been a glint off the glasses that he didn't like, but I can't prove that.  I wore mesh face masks exclusively for years but tried camo face paint for the first time since the old Vietnam era green stuff that was horrible.  I was really impressed with the new stuff.  It didn't run when I got sweaty and it came off easily.  I'll never go back to a face net.  I say give up the net and see how it works.

Deer may catch your glasses glaring sometimes, but you should be in the shade most of the time? I haven’t ever had a problem..at least that I know lol. I just wear normal face masks with the eye cutouts if I wear them at all. Really don’t worry about my glasses except when they fog up.

It costs more, but an anti glare coating should take care of sun glinting off your specs. Barring that, have you tried mosquito netting mine is olive green both sides.

I wear glasses and prefer spando flauge or face paint and always wear a hat to put shade over my eyes.

Only once did I make a squeaking sound after an owl landed on a tree about 20yds away only to have him light out straight for my face. I raised my hand when he was about 15ft out. He landed on another tree and gave me that "I don't play that crap" look. I'm sure HE could see my eyes as his target.

I always wore glasses until my cataract surgery several years ago. I never wore a face mask/head net because of glasses fogging up. I did have a couple of instances where deer spooked with the sun shining in my face. That’s only a couple times in 50 years. I figured I should have set my stand in a better position.

This is what I’ve gone to lately. I wear the black ones in a blind and the camo ones when in a tree or tripod. I get them from a place called SA Company, out of Fl. They are made for fishing, but work great for face concealment while hunting. I think I got 8 of them for $24. I haven’t done it on this one yet, but you really need to cut a small slit where your nose is to keep the warm air from fogging up your glasses. I’ve only had my glasses for a couple months, but like stated above, haven’t gotten busted because of them yet.

Forgot to mention; Get some anti fog treatment for your glasses. Here in Florida with very high humidity my glasses were fogging just shooting in the back yard. No More!

Back in the day when spandoflage came out it was a miracle...

That means we could wear sleeves of  spandoflage with short sleeves here in the South.....

And the faced pullover was absolutely scary how animals could not identify you.

Camouflaging the face is very underrated.... :campfire:

Great tips, all! I think it's important to note that the issue here is not the glasses, it's the fact that the backside (against my face) of the netting is white while the outside is camo. If I remove the netting from in front of my face, I can see normally. With the netting down, I'm blinded by the glare.
I am a confirmed believer that deer are very astute when it comes to staying alive, and know the difference between prey (eyes on the side of the head) and predator (eyes in front), and when they look at me with my self-darkening glasses, what they see is two big eyes looking at them. The fact that I ground hunt makes it all the more critical.
I'll check into spandoflage and see if I can't modify a different hat. How is normal vision through it?

This spando is around 15 years or more old. Had to refresh the camo and cut new eye holes on the opposite side.
I hate trying to see through things like netting . Eye holes are must for me. The material will hang up on the nose pieces but easy to get off.  Just ordered another set of spando off the bay. I also use anti fog on my glasses.

Once had a doe see me on the ground on my stool in a clump of palmettos. She very slowly approached me until about 15 feet away never taking her eyes off me. Finaally turned and left quickly but not really spooked.

Normally I wear a boonie hat but accidently dropped it two weeks ago. Another one of those too is on order.

It works for me.
