need for a Carbon shaft prep tool ?
« on: January 01, 2020, 01:25:54 PM »
Having issues with my inserts coming out of my carbons. I have used gorilla  glue, as well as other adhesives with the same result. I'm looking at an adhesive from 3 rivers called " insert iron". The question I have is, if I use this adhesive, should I purchase the carbon shaft prep tool as well or do you think the " insert iron" will be strong enough where I don't have to spend an additional 16.00?

I prep the inside of carbon shafts with a .30 caliber bore brush chucked into a hand drill. After I rough up the inside of the shaft, I clean it out with a Q-tip dipped in denatured alcohol. After that, insert iron works great as does Fer-L-Tite and other hot glue.

If you use hot glue, be sure to melt the hot melt onto the insert and never heat the shaft.

I use that t- wrench gizmo with the bore brush attached. Then I take either q-tips or paper towel soaked in Acetone to clean out the shaft. I also clean off the insert. I use slow cure 2part epoxy. I have also used JBWeld. No matter what glue you use prep is very important. At least clean out the shaft before gluing. Some epoxy glues are somewhat shock resistant, that’s what I like. I know guys who use low heat sticks like Big Jim sells. It works as well but agian prep is important. Most glue failures I have seen (lost inserts in bale) has been from using low temp glue but NOT cleaning shafts after switching components.

I use a very small round file just rough up the inside a little, then swab out with rubbing alcohol. Big Jim's hot melt easy to use and works great. Watch his video on using it.

Just use Big Jim’s Quick Stick hot melt to install your inserts, and you won’t have any issues with them coming out any more. I have not lost a single insert since I switched over 7yrs ago!!!! And I do zero prep.

I now use arrows with outserts, and have not lost one of those either (but I’ve only been using them a couple months now).

What Bisch said! I’m sure there are others but I’m a hot melt kinda dude. I never do insert prep and only wipe shafts with alcohol before fletching with Fletch tite. Adhesion has never been an issue.

I clean the inside of my carbon shafts with a q-tip and some alcohol. Then I just use Lok-Tite super glue. Never had any issues, even when hitting hard stumps.
