Homemade drum sander... Thoughts?
« on: January 19, 2020, 07:13:40 PM »
I watch this guy on YouTube occasionally. I like his projects and have made a few myself. These plans for a do-it-yourself two stage drum sander are interesting to me for bow building. I have a 4X belt sander with a disk on the side (standard B&D model) that I have been making due with. I don't know if building this would be any cheaper than buying one or not.

I like the idea of being able to sand using the top feature.

What do all ya'll think?

I could see me working on it a long time and not getting the results I want. LOL
Stay sharp, Kenny.

When I was thinking about building mine, I checked out that one and some other refined versions. Decided it was a crapload of work and the time spent to money saved ratio was not good enough to justify that build.

Dang Roy, yours looks just like mine.  How’d that happen?

Just my two cents, buy a baby drum from Grizzly.

As a fellow DIY tool builder, I highly recommend you build your drum sander. But I don't think it needs to be so complex. Crude can be accurate. This one is dead on, unless the feed mechanism stutters (me)

Apologies to those who have seen my posted tools ad nauseam, the subject keeps coming up! :biglaugh:

As a DIY'er when I first decided I want to build bows I built a small drum sander. The drum is only 5" wide. I used scrap I had laying around and scrounged up a motor. I had to pay for the belt and the bearings. It is simple and accurate. I do have to feed it manually but for a couple nights work (fun) and not much money I was able to grind my own lams. The harder part was making the tapered sleds.  That said if I had to purchase the motor I would have not built one but since I was able to do it for very little cost it was worth the time and effort. I can't seem to find a picture of it but it is similar to this but the motor is mounted underneath with a belt to the drum and the table is a bit longer for better support for the sled

Shipping cost for 1100 pounds means I have to go out of retirement and start working again. ;)

This one was made by Brandon Stahl who should need no introduction.
He said it was so accurate he never messed with it.

You might be in luck Keith. bsmith1 stated that he is making a stumpy sander in another thread.
