Krystal Question
« on: March 24, 2020, 11:00:23 AM »
Hope you guys are all doing well, I've been thinking about upgrading my finish for quite a while now and have acquired a nice spray gun from a friend. With our school being shut down I've got plenty of time to finish up some bows. Been leaning towards giving Krystal a try, does anyone know roughly how many bows it would be possible to finish with the pint of dull that big jim offers? Thanks! Stay safe and healthy fellas.

Depends on your gun. If you have a gravity feed, you will use less than a pressure feed or pressure assist gravity feed. A detail gun will use less than a full size. For spraying one bow at a time with a detail gun, I catalyze 2oz's of finish, which gives me a sanding sealer coat and 2 top coats. You don't want a heavy coat with CV.

Krystal is a good finish, although I never used the Dull. I just rubbed out the gloss or added fumed silica to get the desired sheen. Needs to be thinned a little for shooting thru a detail gun @ 20sec in a #4 Ford cup. I would still be using the stuff if my local supplier still carried it.

Thanks Flem. So are you just spraying 3 coats total?

I use Krystal dull for top coats. Not the best choice for base coats. Use the gloss for that. I base coat with epoxy gloss and 320 then Krystal one wet coat and a couple of fog coats.

Yes, I do three coats total. But I'm not using Campbell's. I'm using Mohawk Ultra Clear gloss, which is OK for self sealing and I'm sanding the crap out of the first coat. Like Stic said, the dull is not good for a sanding sealer. Sorry I should have been more specific.
If you are using dull, which is loaded with fumed silica (flattening agent), a vinyl sealer will be a better choice. Then you can shoot 2 top coats. You don't want to build too much finish with CV or it could craze on you.
Mixing small quantities can be a pain in the a$$, especially measuring the catalyst. These 1ml oral syringes are real handy and you can get them cheap at a local pharmacy.

Thanks guys. Any suggestion on what vinyl sealer? Stic what epoxy are you using for your base coat? Also the spray gun I have is a pressure fed gun for painting cars. Should I just grab a cheap gravity fed gun?

I use buffalo hide from Jim. Wish I could find it cheaper tho. My gun is from Grizzly $35 and its a big gun 1.4 tip Gravity feed.
