Stabil-Kore, Uniweft, thicker glass, parallel lamsinations
« on: March 31, 2020, 10:25:43 AM »
I need to be building lighter bows now days, in the 40ish lb range. Up until this last bow I made they were all 50+ lbs and I used .050 glass back and belly and didn't have any lateral instability issues. However on this last bow I built 42# I could feel the limbs were not quite as stabile as my other bows. The last one was 60" takedown recurve built with .040 glass back and belly, .105-.002 taper on the belly and .050 parallel on the back with 1 5/8 width at the fades and 5/8 at the string nocks.

What would be better, add stabil-kore to the limbs or Uniweft (Uniweft is .030 at Bingham's), use 3 parallel lams and no tapers, or use .040 glass on the back and .050 glass on the belly and stick with a taper and parallel lam in the core?

Plus my wife would like a 35# bow. These would all be takedown recurve bows.

This was the bow:

I go with .001 taper stabile core and .040 glass full working limb and taper 10 in. back. Finished width is 1 5/8s 5/8 at grooves.

Kenny has it. I clamp it on a table top with a straight edge and cut it with a sharp box cutter.

I cut it with a pair of scissors.   It's easy to work with.

I just did a couple of limb glue-ups with it for the first time.  It's seems like really cool stuff.

We sell the stabilcore as well. I like to use it in my curves, but don't feel the need in a longbow.

I also cut them to 1.75" before shipping.

How much extra draw weight does stabil-kore add to your bow when you add it to your stack?

It is the equivalent to core for draw weight. Stabilcore is about .0165 thickness. Subtract equivalent from core material... in my experience.

BigJim, I received my stabil-Kor but it wasn't trimmed down to the 1.75, it was the full width.  :o

buddyb, that was a mistake on our part. I apologize. I normally cut the entire roll all at once, but Preacher had your order to fill and the new coil had just came in. He didn't realize that I cut the roll first and stripped off enough pieces to fill orders.

Lay a strip of aluminum down on top of it where you want to cut it and clamp it down... run a razer knife along the edge of the aluminum .. or steel a few times and it will cut easily.

Thanks, BigJim

I got two strips of Gordons brown 1.75x.040 fixin to put in a curve. The last curve I built was BP glass. Wondering if the 1.75 has variation like the 1.5 we been getting.
