Looking for someone in Alabama to help as a mentor...
« on: March 30, 2020, 12:44:45 PM »
Hey gentlemen, I have been helping a few people get into traditional archery/bowhunting over the years and recently been working with young man in Alabama.  Wondering if anyone near Vestavia Hills, AL that can help him take the next step?

I have given him some comments, links to The PUSH video and some by Jimmy Blackmon on aiming styles.....gave him some book recommendations and also DVD series like Masters of the Barebow.

I got him a nice little Ben Pearson recurve heading his way at 45#.....

I think having someone that you can meet to help with form, shooting and most of all encouragement is key to success.

Appreciate any takers...I will give his email if you respond to my messages and are within short drive of his location. Thanks again and have a good week.

I had the same dilemma up where I live and still haven't found anyone local who is a trad shooter.   What did help me immensely is the solid archery mechanics course.  That might be an option if he can't find anyone local.

The Alabama Society of Traditional Bowman are very active in his area, so far the shoots have been canceled until August but they usually have 4 at the Briarfield Iron Works south of Birmingham.  I don't think I have been to a shoot where someone didn't show up wanting to learn about archery. These club members are the salt of the earth and will step up to the plate for anyone who wants to learn. I have taken a few newbies under my wing at shoots when I saw they were struggling.

The difference between loving archery and being too frustrated to continue is often just a little coaching on proper form and shooting.

Your friend is only about 30 miles from where they hold the shoots, down near Montevallo.

Contacted ASTB through facebook page...no response yet.  Will keep fingers crossed. Still find it hard to believe that nobody in here is in Alabama. :)
