Stand/pedestal for vise?

What are you all using to mount your vise?  My bench in my garage isn’t stable enough to be roughing bows on. Not sure I want to anchor a pedestal to the floor and not sure how stable those grinder/vise stands are. Thoughts or suggestions?

I know a lot of guys that mount grinders and vises to brake drums from semis. Can be tipped and rolled around the shop.
Not sure if that would be heavy or stable enough for your purpose.

You could also sleeve your stand pipe so that you would have height adjustment as well.

A buddy of mine has his on a farm tractor wheel weight. It's pretty stable.  Mine is mounted on the corner of my bench which is screwed to the wall and the floor.

Hi Patrick,
   I also have a small shop. I also have lower back pain  that makes standing for more than 45 minutes uncomfortable.
I came up with the cantilevered vise that tucks away under the bench when not in use. It also allows me to sit and work.
It takes a lot of weight to keep a portable vise still and the higher it is the more wiggle. The column is bolted to a cast iron machinists plate that weighs about 300 pounds. It wasn’t enough, so I put 225 pounds of bullet lead on top  (in the green box) If I had it to do over I would just make the column longer and bolt it to the floor.
Sleeving it vertical it like Bvas suggest is a good idea. [attachment=1

Also vice requirements for selfbows are a lot different than what you need for modern bows.  You will shake everything off of the shelves on your bench if your vice/Bench isn't rock solid on a bench roughing selfbows.  I do a lot of my roughing out on a rigid tripod chain vise out in the yard and finish indoors when weather permits.

Mine is made from some oil field pipe and a big disk. It was originally made for taxidermy so it has multiple knuckles that can be used to twist it in any angle that a person wants.  I have a motor with an arbor and drill chuck on it that I with various sanding drums, and wheels to shape and polish a bow.  I don't use a vise much when shaping a bow but it I have extra mounts that I could put a vise on and swap out the motor whenever I wanted.

A couple years ago I mounted a vise right outside my garage door by digging a 3 ft deep hole and pouring a concrete base (with 4 threaded steel anchors protruding). I then welded up a short base to mate with the concrete base and with vise (a vise that  I didn’t mind having outside). I use it all the time for grinding and doing other tasks that won’t dirty up the garage.  If I were to start hogging on a bow tomorrow I would use that vice as it is extremely sturdy. It was a cheap project too.   Can never have too many.

I made mine from a wide truck rim, a piece of pipe, and 1/4” plate. It’s heavy and works well for what I need.  There is a bit of wobble, but nothing too severe.
