Draw Length and Total Working Limb
« on: June 15, 2020, 04:54:21 PM »
So I get these ideas in my head sometimes. I'm not a bowyer, and I have too many projects on right now to build one and see for myself right now, so I'm asking y'all my questions. Indulge my curiosity if you will:

Anyways, in no particular order, here goes:

What is the minimum amount of working limb that is needed for a certain draw length? In this case, lets assume a fairly aggressive reflex/deflex hybrid longbow.

Naturally, stiff tips and a long riser will give a good string angle, but how do you manage stack? This is interesting to me because I draw 32". Ideally you want the shortest limbs that will still handle your draw if you care about maximizing arrow speed, right?

Do limbs with non working tips generate more speed? Why? And at what expense to total available draw length for a given bow length?

I guess the question is, how do you go about designing a high performance limb? I don't want trade secrets, I'm just trying to understand the physics at play when trying to balance limb stability, shootability, and speed. I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Welcome over here
Your a Trad Bow hunter

To start with you may be able to answer some of your own questions.
What Trad Bows to you have that will draw to 30 or 32", Recurves or R/D?
You may have some bows that could do that for you with some modifications?
you can put masking tape from fade to tip on back and belly, mark lines every 1" and measure with dial calipers and record every 1" from nock to fade, if you are over working the limbs, make them longer.
The last question you asked? lot's of people do not know.
I think almost all  of the limb needs to work :)

Let's see what other's say?

I would rather fail at something above my means, than to succeed at something  beneath my means

Design comes to play here. as a rule short draw short bow and vic versa. I have an R/D that will go to 33 in. 58 in. long
