question for metal riser shooters
« on: April 17, 2008, 10:55:00 PM »
I have found a PSE Stalker Heritage series recurve (alum. riser and glass limbs) that is for sale and it looks like something I may try out.
I can find no information on the PSE site or an internet search about these bows. I think the last year of production was 1998.
It has a worn arrow rest that will probaly have to be replaced and an old string that I will not trust too far.
Can anybody give me an idea of sting type (B50 or FF), brace height range, etc.
I have zero knowledge of these modern type recurves.
            Thanks,   Doug

I don't know anything about that particular bow.As for some of the other PSE metal riser recurves,IMHO there are better metal riser bows for close to the same money.

Take a look at the Quinn bows. Also a Warf by Bob Gordon will really suprise you.

Hi Randy, Thanks for the response. This bow is just available at a good price and I always wondered about metal riser type bows, never shot one.
I am counting the days till the Howard Hill shoot, I may even make it to Tannehill for the Apr 26th shoot. See you then.  Doug

IF memory serves...I believe the PSE Stalker was an adaptation of the old Powerflite compound riser...actally a pretty good riser, but the limbs were very, very basic and with that in mind, your not really gonna get a good feel for MRB's

Check out the auction site for something like a Bear 76'er or a Bear Minuteman. Both are metal riser recurves and won't set you back much. The 76'er uses all glass limbs and you can get one for under $150 maybe under $100. The Minuteman is a similar riser (but not exactly the same) and uses laminated limbs and you should be able to get one for under $200. There are some on the other site right now if you are interested.

Hope this helps.

I have a friend who has one of these in #55, has taken several deer. He shoots his off a  bear hair type rest from 3 Rivers, good arrow flight, shoots vanes, real simple, effective! He bought it used for $75, and that makes it that more enjoyable. I have 2 BW with amluminum/mag risers, that I have recently bought. I confess to being a woodbow snob, but when I shot these bows I shot them better than any bow I ever shot. One of these has the bear hair rest, the other of the shelf with carpet, one has 2 sets of limbs. I ended up with about $350 in the two bows ,and more and more my wood bows sit in the shop and get jealous. I tuned my string, and put on beaver balls string silencers, all I hear is my arrow hit, smack!

I've been shooting an old metal riser Black Widow from the 70's.Shoots great but had quite a bit of hand shock and was cold in the hand. Jerry schriver of Greenwood was kind enough to fix me up with a leather handle wrap that cured both problems.   Now it shoots and feels much nicer in the hand and looks so much better. If interested in one of these bows ,look up BWidow HF1225

I recently bought a PSE Kingfisher  recurve it has a alum riser..My only dislike is that it feels more like a coumpound ! And is alot heaver than my mikuta longbow..
But bought it to bowfish with so it will serve the  purpose..

But would hesitate to use it hunting if I had to.

I was very suprised how well it shoots,  shooting off the self.  Great price also

Do yourself a favor and try a Quinn Stallion. They may be inexpensive but they give up nothing to the more expensive offerings.
I've owned warfs, a DAS Master a Gamemaster. They moved on down the line. I have 2 Stallions now and won't even think of parting with them.
