I hunt just about entirely on the ground now that I am a "seasoned citizen" and hunt mostly by myself (which my wife isn't fond of me doing).  I have found from my experience that background is important--something to break up your form.  I have had close shots at deer with almost no cover in front of me.  We normally feel like we need to hide behind something, but between front and back cover, I think what's behind me is more important than what's in front of me.

Here's on of my setups. It's on a sidehill that the deer move along the base of the hill, so I'm above the deer by 20 feet and about 15- 20 yards away. I just dig a seat and clear out a spot for my feet (and lower limb clearance) and add some screen cover in front with some zip ties.  The hill and stumps/tree behind me give me a nice back cover.  My daughter and I were sitting in this blind 5 years ago and she had an 8 point and 3 point within 20 yards for several minutes (just couldn't get the right shot angle for a rookie bowhunter) but they never knew we were there. 

Also, I try to rake a path for approach (about 100 yards) so I can sneak in on those super quiet mornings

Here's another spot on the farm with the same earthen seat concept. The bright light just over the top of blind is a cherry orchard the deer travel through and I literally have 5 steps down out of the orchard and into this blind, so easy/quiet access. I added some screening in front after I took the picture, but wanted to show you how this setup basically puts me in a dark shadow.  There's a cedar tree and juniper bush behind me on the top of the hill and that helps to create the dark back cover in addition to the earthen seat.  I'm standing on the deer trail that diagonals down the hill into the swamp (17 yard shot on my left side-right handed)

I put up 5 or 6 of these dead log blinds on the last land I hunted. Very comfortable and I stay well hidden. I killed the most deer out of this one but all flintlock kills, no deer got in range when I was bow hunting. There are 7 or 8 big whiteoaks in front of the blind.

The buck is visiting a scrape which I hade made. The blind is 14 yards behind him.

I used this spot this morning. Pic taken from approx. 12-14 paces. My ghillie, bow and chair in the pic. Directly behind me another 10 yards is a pond about the size of the footprint of a house, half dry with tracks all over it. I was on the south side. At 9:10am, five antlerless deer circled the pond to the north and came back on the west side to about 40 yards. No shots.

Man, these pictures of setups and examples of success are inspiring. Need to spend some time working on these rather than just tree stands. Thanks to all.

My Grandson rearranged his uncles wood pile in his yard to make a blind. Wood stacked on three sides and brush in front. He is all wound up about does and fawns at 30 ft. I told him that is what hunting is all about.
