Topo map App

Any experience with suggestions for topo map app?

Would prefer to avoid annual membership. 

Need it for preliminary scouting with the intention of buying real maps once I want to do more intensive study.

Us topo maps.  I have the app on my phone , use it all the time.

My son put me onto hillmap.com.  Free.  Super good. Easy to use.  On left side of screen will be a map, which after zeroing in your your area, use pull down menu to switch it to caltopo or other topo.  Right side of screen will come up as google earth.  As you zoom or whatever on one side, the other will match scale.  See topo on left, see google earth on right of the same area.
