Where’s my maple guys?
« on: September 24, 2020, 08:11:42 PM »
So I got a care package from one of my customers at work who is a hobby woodworker. He makes bowls and other turned items. He brought me a 4”x6”x10” piece of highly figured curly maple and 2- 1.5”x1.5”x40” pieces of hard maple. My first instinct is to cut it in half longways and splice it to be a backed with bamboo. It would yield 2 bows but not much info on bamboo and maple bows. Other idea is see if any of you would be willing to cut into tapered lams and use it build my first bow off my form that I got from crooked stick to make a FHLB.

So brain trust what makes the most sense so I don’t waste it?

Thanks Cody

PS: my shoulder has fully healed and I’ve been back shooting and am ready to hunt my butt off this year.

I can’t help ya with the selfbow, but KennyM could grind lams for you.

I just sent him some walnut and cherry to do just that. They were perfect.

Use the curly for veneers. If the other is hard then it will be good for core preferably edge grain.

the figured maple wood will not do well in compression or tension.
use it in a glass bow under clear glass or use it in a riser.
 some of my favourite wood!

Glad to hear your shoulder has healed! That was a long road with blind corners.
That Maple was a nice gift. Sound like you could make a pretty sweet all Maple bow with the curly for a riser and the hard for limbs.

Bamboo and maple is an excellent combination.  I have made three this year and love that combo.  Glue it up with some perry reflex and it should maintain some reflex just unbraced.  I have come to like hard maple better than anything else for bamboo backed lumber bows.
