Best wool pants - Woolrich or Filson?
« on: April 20, 2008, 06:46:00 PM »
Hi guys,,

Looking to purchase a new pair of wool pants (non camo),, Woolrich and Filson both have good looking , heavy wool pants, however the Filson are 2X the cost, is Filson still the way to go?,,
Thanks for your input,,Frank

Filson. Woolrich just doesn't have the kind of weave I like.

Uh... I would probably go with woolrich down south here, cuz the filson wool liner for my packer jacket is heavy... but if I lived up in the great white north... no question... FILSON!!!

I just got two Filson wool sweaters in, but will have to wait a while to wear them. Also got one of their shelter hats for trad huntin in the cold rain.
Years ago I bought a hunting vest that happened to be Filson, the oil cloth. Still use it a lot and thats been 20 years ago. Good products.

You might also consider Johnson Woolen Mills. My father has had a pair for many years.

If it was the older woolrich from 40 years ago, I would say WR but today the Filson stuff is much better quality. Shawn

Ontario Longbow,

I am a big Filsons fan and would go with their stuff. Tough and proven. That being said, you might want to have a look at Cabela's "Legacy Superwash Wool Pants".

 http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp?id=0022572942016a&type=product&cmCat=SEARCH&returnPage=search-results1.jsp&QueryText=wool+pants&N=4887&Ntk=Products&Ntx=m  ode+matchall&Nty=1&Ntt=wool+pants&noImage=0

I bought a pair last fall and used them in some very cold weather. Love them. And the price is right.

While I fully endorse Filson's stuff, my biggest beef with a lot of wool garments is that they cannot be machine or hand-washed. The instructions always call for dry cleaning, which is the antithesis of what hunters are about. Aside from this, I have been told that the solvents used in dry cleaning actually end up taking away from some of the inherent qualities of wool.

Another outfit you might want to look at is King of the Mountain. I am not sure if they make non-cammo pants but you can always ask:

 www.kingofthemountainonline.com

This is expensive stuff but excellent quality and can be washed by hand or in a machine. Ralph DeMeo is a great guy to deal with and better yet, he knows his stuff. He should, he has pretty much field tested the stuff that he sells. Cannot say enough good things about the guy.

Cheers,

Robert

I have Filson Wollrich and a couple others, but the best I have are military wools from Sweden that I paid ten dollars a pair.  i bought four of them, that is all any of our gang wear anymore.

Ha Laddy, you beat me to it.  I LOVE my Swedish wool pants.

I own a Filson double mackinaw and love it but it's a bit bulky totry to bowhunt with.  I have an old NAO (forerunner to hidden wolf) that I never use much and a KOM bowman jacket that is my go to jacket.

That said, I like the design of the KOM the best by far but I've never tried their pants.  I'm sure the quality is great but I've never had a need for them that exceeded the abilities of my Swedish wool surplus pants enough to justify the expense.  Sure, they aren't camo, but the olive drab/greyish color really blends well and they are very thick and warm.
Dave

I've come to believe that the keys to shooting well for me are good form, trusting the bow to do all the work, and having the confidence in the bow and myself to remain motionless and relaxed at release until the arrow hits the mark.

Local Thrift shop wool dress pants in light grey - six dollars. Buy them a size big, throw them in the laundry so they shrink down to fit and will have a supertight weave that will be very windproof.  Make your own custom camo pattern on them with some fabric dye.

Between the two I would go with filson (in my opinion a much better product). But you might want to look into swanndri wool from new zealand, I recently purchased a bushman shirt from them and I really enjoy it.
