Wyoming points
« on: October 31, 2020, 09:06:01 AM »
Just bought my elk and deer points in Wyoming. I will have 8 elk and 9 deer points. With these amounts where would you go for each as a non-resident?

Well, don't go to Unit G, my hunting partner and I burned 8 points to draw this year, hunted it hard for both archery AND rifle, must have spent 15 days hunting in total. We never laid eyes on a buck, not once. Wait, I did see two bucks by Electric Peak in mid Sept. (one was a 170 class buck), we made a play and got kinda close, but that was it. My hunting partner did not lay eyes on a buck. So, in short, Unit G was pretty horrible. Note that I've hunted Unit G before (in 2012), saw lots of buck.... 2020? Not so much....

Tempted to go with an outfitter. Not a guarantee but should improve the odds. Coming all the way from Oklahoma, I won't have a lot of time for a preseason scouting trip.

Call 7 J for help on that. I have 6 points for elk. I'm going to wait until I have enough for a really good area. It's going to take 8 or 10 for that.

Thanks. I have a buddy in Wiliamsport Pa. Looks like my next trip to Wyoming will be 2022 at the earliest.

I would have cashed in my points for general tag long ago. I don’t think there is a bad unit in Wyoming. Some are better at different years. That said I would love to hunt the big horn mountains someday.

It it’s any help, My hunting partner and I have 11 elk points each, but the area is a great elk spot with nice animals (38). Generally apply for two of the following three areas as alternates (39, 40, 41) and we’re still buying points, lol. I’ve drawn elk tags twice before in 38 and it only took 3 points, but that was a LONG time ago and I think those days are over. It’s going to be an expensive tag by the time I draw, haha!  I am pretty certain there are areas that don’t take that many, and I’ve considered it, but I’m this far into it now I’d hate to throw away points unnecessarily. We gotta be getting close!

I have 9 also. I drew a good unit 2 years ago. But had to turn back my tag for medical reason. Wyoming was understanding and reinstated my points. So now I am back in the game. Good luck!
