Fresh start
« on: December 09, 2020, 07:25:54 AM »
I've toyed around with trad bows for a few years off and on, just had never committed.

Picked up a new BW PSA recurve this last week, went with a 40# @ 28". May be a little light for hunting, but my reasoning is to get my form perfected on the lighter limbs, can always order heavier if necessary.

Soon as my wheel bow sells im buying a membership to Mr. Clums shooting clinic. I'm going to start my new journey right this time.

Going to get a quiver and a couple bare shaft kits ordered.

Just got the side plate removed, and sticking on a Hoyt flipper rest today.

Any advice for someone essentially restarting their trad journey?

40# is plenty for deer and a good weight to get you started.

Start out at about 10 yards for practice.

Form and mental approach is essential, do not let your subconscious mind screw you up..

There is a shooters form section in here and any questions you may have can be answered there.

Arnie Moe is a very good archery instructor and has many videos on YouTube, he also frequents the shooters form section.

Don't overthink it. I'm terrible at doing this. It has nearly ruined the sport for me more than once.

Once you have your form dialed in, pick a spot, shoot and have fun. That's it, nothing more.

There's going to be highs and lows. Just try to stay positive during the lows, it's tough. This site has helped me a lot through those.

Good luck man.

Throw "groups" out the window!!! It's a compound thing...

"Instinctive" Traditional Archery is about consistency.
Grab your bow, and ONE arrow, and go out and shoot. You want every arrow, to be your first arrow.
Shoot one arrow, access your shot, (good? bad? WHY? if you can figure it out?) Retrieve and Repeat...
Go slow!!! It's a learning process... The ultimate goal? The first arrow you shoot, goes right where you want it to.

Enjoy the Journey, Brother!!! :archer2:
I only shoot WOOD arrows... My kid makes them, fast as I can break them!

There is a fine line between Hunting, & Sitting there looking Stupid...

May The Great Spirit Guide Your Arrows..... Happy Hunting!!!

I'm doing it the right way this time around.

Nice manageable bow, watched the first few videos of Solid Archery Mechanics.

I'm excited, its reignighting some of what I learned with Mr. Jenkins and adding to it!

Same here.  I plan to go see Rich Welch in 2021 (I live in Arkansas) and finally get this figured out.

You asked for advice: Pick a Bow, a shooting style and stick to it. The people I’ve known with the worst shooting problems were the dabblers. Recurve one week,ASL then hybrid. Very, very few people are able to just grab any bow and have the same consistency, no matter what they try to tell themselves. If your shooting without sites your relying on your brain and hand eye coordination to put that arrow on target. Changing bows and arrow weights every other week is not conducive to the process.

My $0.02 is that biomechanically correct shooting form is the best single thing that a person can do to ensure consistent accuracy with a trad bow.....and the best place to learn this sort of thing is from the best shooters and coaches in olympic style archery.  These folks have spent lifetimes figuring out the best ways to draw, anchor, and release recurve bows and it shows.  Things like maintaining bone to bone form, activating and using the correct muscle groups, and having the best release possible are vital to anyone who wants to shoot any sort of non-compound bow as well as possible....and any one of them done inconsistently or incorrectly will derail the shot.  I think the single thing that I see most often among otherwise good trad shooters, is failure to maintain ever-increasing string tension throughout the shot by consistent expansion.  Its the quickest way to a clean release and better arrow flight.  I am encouraged because it seems like people are really beginning to accept these strategies that target archers have perfected over generations.

Welcome to the journey...can't really add much more than what's been said. I can however tell you I actually spent a day with Tom Clum at his shop and he is one.od the nicest most knowledge able guys you can learn from. If it's in anyway possible I'd suggest you spend a day with him one on one before doing his online course...not that his online course isn't good but just some.of the finer points he can and will show you is well worth it.  Good luck and enjoy your set up and by the way 40 lb blackwidow is plenty good enough for deer and such
