I used wheels to get my stuff far from camp. I saw no other hunters in the woods.

Hunted out of a Palm Tree this year situated well over a scrape that deer hit every night.

And my buddy Armadillo who got my heart started a couple a times

This was my first time hunting Blackbeard. I have been thinking about going for fifteen years but due other hunts and such I just didn't have the time until this year.  It was a great experience and I will definitely go back.  Probably for both hunts next year.  I don't think you can find a better public land bowhunt, in December, anywhere else.  I did not get a deer but saw deer and/or pigs every sit.

Matt, sorry that we only got to say “hi”.  I meant to find you and talk some more but lost track of time.  Let’s catch up next year!  I was really happy that the hogs are back and with the nice bucks that were killed this year.

The PBS group was supposed to be 14 in number but ended up at 9, due to the China virus wreaking several members’s plans.  We learned a lot and hope to put that experience to good use next time.

It was my first trip to Blackbeard but it won’t be my last.  I had a fantastic time hanging with the PBS group. I saw deer on 5 occasions and had an encounter with a monster boar in a swamp.  This island is just magical and everyone should experience it at least once.

I think?

Either way google Savannah River hunting complex - the website will tell you a lot

Permit - yes $25 annual
GA license yes - my year round cost about $325
Hire a boat to take you to the Blackbeard dock and pick you up there a few days later about $150

And for you guys that plan to hunt only one of the Blackbeard hunts - Oct OR Dec - you can get Big Game and a Short term Hunting comes in under $150 last time I looked - Thanks

Several things about this hunt to keep in mind.  The skeeters and no-see-ums can be fierce with warmer weather, it can rain hard on this island, there are tons of snakes including rattlers and cottonmouths, and it is common for the resident gators to steal a deer or pig if it runs into a slough when shot.  These things just make the hunt more adventurous, I think.  Be sure to bring plenty of ice - this year there was a problem with the walk-in cooler and some deer and hogs were spoiled.😔. They now allow e-bikes, which makes it a LOT easier to get from the campground to the end of the island.  Those things can really move, several of us nearly got run over.

I won't miss another December hunt - it is a unique and challenging place.   I already miss it.   It is indescribably beautiful and the guys that go regularly get a lot of shots.  I hope to join that group of regulars over the next few years.    Great people too.   Good to see Cory and Matt although I didn't get to eat any of Cory's food but maybe next time. . .
