Thoughts on Going to Woodies....

As you might have read in my last few posts, I have gotten back into trad archery for the last few months. Most of my experience with arrows has been either aluminum or carbon, I have actually never shot a wood arrow!  So I thought I would come to you all for some advice.  Right now I am running full length (32") Beeman 340 Carbons with 260-270 grains up front, 5" shield cuts.  My draw length is 31.5" and my favorite bow pulls 70# at that length.  I have been looking through several catalogs an I have no idea how to replicate these arrows with woodies.  How do you get that much weight up front?  I have not seen any inserts or any adapters for wood arrows.  Does anyone have any recommendations that might steer me in the right direction?  Thanks.  

PS is there any arrow build alongs or step by step instructions for building woodies?  I am a complete newbie at this one.....

I went the other direction...after shooting woods for 8-10 years, I shifted over to carbons.

Here's what I will say, the high FOC is hard to get with wood arrows, and most of the time is not necessary since spines are not as stiff as carbons.  That being said, good wood shafts may be hard to find in your spine weight and length. Others will chime in here to help you out.

Whatever broadhead you shoot, it should be a glue-on model for wood shafts.  Field points are glue-ons as well.  They do make aluminum screw-in adapters for woodies, but I don't have any experience with these.  I know Kustom King has them.  Best of luck.

You will have a tough time achieving eFOC given the point weight and spine requirements. Look for some really stiff cedar-likely 100# or thereabouts depending on the cut of your riser, and try various point weights.
Although I only shoot wood-my advise is stick with what's working for you now.

To get a wood shaft to 31.5 BOP you will probably have to have a footed shaft, that will add about 50 grs up front depending on the footing material. I have shafts up to 115#@28" how ever without footing the longest I can get is 30.5"BOP I can go to 32 1/2" with a foot.

Beepy, I was going to suggest Aromakr (Whispering Wind Arrows) to you.  Looks like he beat me here.  With your long arrows, you shouldn't have a problem coming up with a heavy enuf arrow and Bob can take care of your length and spine needs.  I think you will enjoy shooting woods.

Thanks guys, I am going to try and build some up next weekend and see what flies (pun intended of course!)  Aren't footed shafts price as all get-out though?  I couldn't see myself around the 3-D range with $120/doz arrows, I would just be too flipping nervous....

When I finished some arras with varathane, I dipped the front several times more than the back. This gave me more weight up front.
You can get a lot of heads in the 175 to 200 weight range. Experment and have fun but don't hesitate to buy some real good un's from these here profesional arra makers.
