Artificial Snakeskin backing ????
« on: February 03, 2021, 10:06:18 PM »
Ok ........... Got a set today. They look pretty cool but info on how to apply them to the limbs is somewhat lacking and I'd prefer the bow end up looking good rather than goofy.
I've got the skins and a tube of Barge cement.
Anybody have any advice or things to watch out for ????

Thanx !!!!!

I've never applied an artificial snake skin and haven't yet put any snake skins on a glass bow. Barge cement would work I guess but it is a contact cement and you have to apply the glue to both surfaces, the bow and the skin. Then you have to lay the skin down, very carefully to the bow's back. Once the 2 glue surfaces touch they are connected, whether correctly or not. If laid down with a wrinkle you will have to live with it. I think folks use TBIII to attach real skins to glass bows but I don't know how it would work with the artificial skins. What does the manufacturer suggest for glue with the artificial skins?  Hopefully someone that has applied artificial skins to a glass bow will reply.

I have done quite a few with the faux snakeskins and used titebond 3. applied a coating to limbs as 'size' and allowed to dry, then dunked the ''skins'' in water and squeezed mostly dry before applying liberal coat of titebond to both the skin and limb.I work the skin with fingers as I apply to remove bubbles and coat the outer side with the titebond as well. Some wrap a cloth bandage around the limb then to hold it place.I always allow at least several days drying before doing any thing else to it. Justs low and steady. then wait several more days before working limb.  Use a very sharp boxcutter running along limb edge to remove overhang.then I wait another few days before working the limb. May not be necessary but playing safe.

Thanx Guys !!!!!!
The contact cement frightened me so I went with Gorilla Wood Glue that I've had good results with on other projects. Sprayed a few coats of Krylon Matte to seal the surface then trimmed the edges.
Totally cool !!!!!

Sadly, my archery skills far outpace my computer skills.  Technologic-ly I'm almost Amish.
But .................... If you notice that the temperature today is a wee bit lower, it's because my bow IS SOOOO COOL !!!
